Practice PA for Vox - cheapest option?

Hi - it's a long time since I messed around with electricity (in a musical context), and even then, it was my pals who took more interest in sound issues...

I have a nice compact pair of speakers which my bro used to use for mobile DJing, and I'm wondering what the cheapest option would be to get set up for vocals for practice use..

Would I need a mixer, or could I just get some kind of a mic pre-amp to plug straight into an amp?

Any suggestions - it would have to be on the cheap, so I'll be looking at second-hand (Adverts.ie links welcome :) )

Any advice appreciated - complete noob..

OK, maybe I was a bit vague, or maybe I'm in the wrong place - if so, please move mods...

So after a bit of reading, here's where I am.

I now have an amp and speakers (I thought the amp I had was dead, but it turns out it needs a small repair).

I was looking at some mixers, and discovered that some modern ones have usb outputs - I'd be interested in setting up to do some home recording in Audacity or similar, as well as using the mixer with the amp and speakers for band practice..

Would I be correct in assuming that a USB mixer, such as this
    Behringer Xenyx X1622USB
would do both jobs for me?
Would the behringer eliminate the need for an external sound card / audio interface for my computer - previously I'd been looking at the M Audio Fast Track Pro, but am I right to say I wouldn't need that with the above mixer?

i use a xenyx usb for recording... but your pc will need to be reasonably quick... very easy to use... would recommend!

    Thank you Doctor
So no need for another soundcard / interface between the pc and the mixer? (sorry, I'm completely clueless with this new-fangled technology)

    short version...

you'll get drivers off the behringer site and when you run the multitracking software you'll get input options.. pick the behringer usb and then you'll have a digital copy of the stereo out from the desk going into the software.

it'll take a while of messing around to get used to it but the results are brilliant for the little amount of money you lay out!
