I have recently purchased a galaxy s2 in the last 3 weeks - over the last week it started to freeze during calls etc but would come back to life. Today it has died a death and I cannot power it up even though I have it fully charged. Any ideas??

If you have tried the obvious like removing and re-inserting the battery (& SD card) I would probably bring it back for a replacement. It sounds unreliable and even if it comes back to life this time you may be probably better to get it sorted under warranty now before you invest too much time loading things onto it.

This happened to me with galaxy 1 and I had to drop it back to 3 - it took a week for them to fix it, they had to do something with the software.

Yes I agree, the thing is you must afford them the opportunity to put it right then if it happens again you can refuse to accept a repair, you go for replacement. That's the law.
