Shoe problem - gap between my heel and back of shoe

Would anyone have any suggestions for the following problem:

Whenever I try on a pair of heels (mid size heel, I don't go for v high ones) I always have a big gap between the back of my heel and the back of the shoe, so that I look like I'm a kid wearing grown up shoes. My foot seems to be slipping forward right into the top of the shoe.

I'm definitely trying on the right size, when I try a size smaller my feet are completely cramped. Insoles sometimes help but they usually make my toes/widest part of my foot cramped. I have also tried those heel grips, but the gap is too large so they don't work.

Anyone have any suggestions? I find it so difficult to get shoes.... I was thinking about trying to put some sponge at the toe of the shoe to stop my foot slipping forward... anyone tried this?

It sounds like you have the same problem as me.... which comes down to foot width rather than size.

My feet are a 6, but they are wide and feel BET into a 6 if I want to wear heels.

If I try on the 7, there is more room for my feet to go forward, but then I get the gap at the back too.

Shoes aren't made in enough varying widths :(

I've the same problem, I usually get some of those party feet heel grips and found they did the job grand.
