The second one starts with an A.

Could the first one be Navan?
Though the 'v' doesn't look right...

And why do you not know where you're from if this is your family cert?!

No. A primary school teacher. So well used to deciphering cat-scrawled pages at this stage. :P

Edit: Would it be worth transferring this thread to a Tipperary forum in case the first word is a townland, or a very local placename?

What are the family surnames? May narrow down the area

Could be right. Put Rahan into Google Maps and it brings you to a small village around Tullamore, so close enough to Roscrea to be a strong possibility.

Wonder will they transfer these bad boys....
But I don't want it in Euro

It looks to me like whatever the second place name begins with is the middle letter of the first name. Though it kinda does look like Roscrea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,646 ✭✭✭✭Sauve

On looking at the rest of the lines, I say it's Rahan and Roscrea alright...

Their first names are Michael and Jarab.
    Hope that helps.

    I still say both Cork

Michael and Sarah (Clarke?). Sarah's address looks like 134 Gloucester something. I think possibly the address shown for the parents might just say Eorum indicating the same address as their children, could be totally wrong on that.

    tia.

First one looks like the old english for Alderaan, in the Alderaan Sector. Long gone now OP.
Second one, in my eye, is Dagobah for sure. Granddad here agrees with me

    It's Latin.
Eorum Residentia = Their place of residence. Denuntiationes = marriage
Looks like a church register so could be parishes rather than towns/townlands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Cedrus

    Michael L………Fitzgibbon Square?
    Sarah Cl…ter 134 Gloucester Tcce.?
I’d agree with Rahan and Roscrea for the Eorum Residentia of the Parentum but have no idea what their names are.
The date at the top looks like 1891 have you tried the 1901 census a mere 10 years later http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ ?

I always go to the nearest Secretary/Typist to read squiggly writing, they seem to have 'The Sight'.;)

Many thanks to everyone who replied to Maxextz's query. The name Roscrea makes a lot of sense as this is where the bride Sarah Charles was born. I also thought it said Rahan and my suspicions have been confirmed :) so now I know where to start looking for Michael Larkin. Btw this image has been taken from a parish register, dated 1871.

My birth cert is also hard to read, could they not have thought to use block capitals back in the day, stupid olden cunts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 486 ✭✭jackie1974

I think its rahan and roscore, both in the parish of Rahan, Mucklagh and The Island parish

    http://www.rahanparish.ie/map_of_rahan_parish_.html

Edit: Just read Penzancechick post, Roscrea makes sense.

OP should take it to their local pharmacist, they can read anything.

Looks like Puckane and Roscrea to me. Both in Tipp.

I think you will find this is Latin and translates as place of residence. If it was from the 1800's it would not be unusual for parish documents to be in Latin.

Definitely Puckane and Roscrea only 22 miles apart as the crow flies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭Al Capwned

    The top one is Newtownmountkennedy,
and the second one i think, after careful consideration, is Ballinabrannagh.
