Are they? Really who can match them? Their style of play is definitely the most attractive ever played. No team in history can match their technique. Messi is arguably the best player of all time. They simply destroy teams. What team is actually close to them? No one. A blessing to football and to us the fans.

Debatable! Personally I find them quite tedious to watch.

    You are obviously very young.

You are obviously stuck in the past if you think the likes of early 90's Milan or 70's Brazil could even hold a candle to this side. They would start great, then lose the ball and never get it back.

    Think.

Yes imo. Have never seen anyone who comes close, Milan maybe at a push.

Anyone else agree when Barca go 3 or 4 up they are the most boring team to watch?

Madrid are just as exciting, they keep on going to the 90 to get goals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭craggles

When they go 4 or 5 up they keep the ball for the rest of the game and suffocate teams.

Their most common result at home is 5-0.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,738 ✭✭✭CR 7

All this because they won a few glorified friendlies? Wouldn't the greatest team ever have no problem winning every game, and be comfortably ahead in the league?

Hundreds of short passes between the defence and keeper doesn't make them attractive either.

Absolutely. That team is just phenomenal. If they're struggling to break teams down, they don't get frustrated. They'll just pass and pass and will wait until a hole opens in the defence's formation set up and then bang, it's 1-0 and more than likely game over. No one can match them at all. No one even dares to play football against them any more. Everyone tries to defend and shut up and hope for the best tbh.

Are you saying they're not the greatest team ever? Who actually comes close? They're by far and away the best team in the world now. No one even comes close to matching them with that.

They're a fantastic team no doubt. However throwing out things like 'definitely most attractive ever played' means youre either 90 years old or just like jumping to conclusions. Why is Messi arguably the best player ever, but theyre not 'arguably' the best team ever?

    Love watching them though.

From what I heard about the Madrid game Madrid should have been 3 or 4 up in the first half as madrid pushed their strikers up on the barca defence.

Also the gap in quality between the top 2 in spain and the rest is rediculous.

    No doubt.

That said, I can see Madrid winning the league this year by dropping less points against the lesser teams, but wouldn't look past Barça winning the second clásico, especially at home.

And no, that doesn't mean Barça can't be the greatest team ever. Their consistency over the past 3+ years has been insane, that can't last forever, no matter how strong the side is. When motivated though (for big games), they can look unstoppable. Recent clásico is a great example, totally outclassed Madrid again, form side in the world at the time.

    Huh?

Anyway people are forgetting that Barcelona are basing themselves on the total football sides of Ajax of the 1970s (who won the European cup three times in a row).

Milan of the 1990s were magnificent and had a better defence. I cant comment on The Brazil sides that are famous or the famous Santos sides that Pele played for. Its not like now where S. Americans transferred over to Europe.

You also have Honved and the Mighty Magyars propelled by Puskas and all the other great Hungarian stars.

Barcelona just happen to be the best team of this generation. Thats all. In ten years time you will get posts saying are Cork City the best team of all time and is Murphy the greatest player ever (well I can wish). Swings and Roundabouts.

    Rubbish.

The gap in Spain is obvious (Sevilla conceding 6 at home last night the latest example) but put those two teams in any other league and they'd finish ahead of the rest. Remember, Barça have absolutely battered Arsenal and United more than once. Way ahead atm.

In the last ten years only three teams have won the English title.

In Spain only three teams have won the title.

    No difference.

Over 20 years Five teams in each league - again no difference.

They did press high. But eventually Barca worked them out and Madrid got tired. Madrid didn't have anything left in the tank with 20 minutes to go.

The gap in quality between the top 2 in Spain and the rest of the world is ridiculous. No one comes close to them.

    You're right!

But over the past few years particularly, Barça and Madrid have built very good sides, and the gap has become bigger and bigger. What I'm saying is these two teams would also dominate in England, not that they're having it too easy in Spain. I don't necessarily think the Premier League is all that strong either for what it's worth.

Yes they are, comprehensively so, in my opinion. Fitness and speed of play would beat all but the Milan side of the 90s and probably them too.

When you see monstruous teams like the current Madrid and Ji Sung Park worn out, running on completely empty, you see the effort required. When you see the obsession, the funds, the power, the determination and the will from Madrid to beat them yet are so soundly beaten, they are that far in front.

13/16 trophies under Guardiola. The three others were two Copa del Rey titles - one lost on away goals in the semi final, one lost in extra time in the final and one Champions League after a Volcano bus trip and an injury time winner ruled out. Incredible. Pique, Puyol, Pedro, Villa, Iniesta, Busquets, Xavi, Valdes - all hold both World and European titles at both club and international level. Incredible.
I'm fairly sure the fanboys take turns making this thread after every win.

And everytime the blind still refuse to see it.

The best team ever? No clue. One thing for sure is that they make the good teams of this current generation look very ordinary and exhausted. They gifted Madrid with the perfect start and still bowled them over.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,224 ✭✭✭✭SantryRed

They're only tedious to watch with some people when the other team puts 11 behind the ball. Not their fault. I enjoy them regardless.

Of course most people are aware of their position in the league right now. It doesn't matter though, they are the greatest team of the last 30 years anyways. Far better than even the great Milan side. I never thought I'd be saying that anybody was better than that Milan team.

Because the team above them is also very strong. However, a league season is a marathon and not a sprint. Do you think Madrid are better than them?

You see I think thats a fair enough opinion because its based on observation but to claim as others do that they are the best team ever is mad.

The Man Utd fans don't like Barca because they always beat them.

well we got better of them in 1991 and 2008 as well as knocking them out in 1999.

Football started long before May 2009.

But to say they are not great team is laughable tbf

I suppose the Milan of the late 80's early 90's would be the only team to really rival them.

Rijkaard, Gullit, Van Basten, Maldidini & Baresi (Possibly Costacurta) would all get place in that Barca side no problem.

Messi, Xavi, Iniesta & Alves are the only ones from the Barca team who would be certain of a place in the Milan side.

Imo of course others might see it differently.

You don't think Spain's all time top scorer would get into the Milan side?

I'm not so sure Guilit and Rijkaard would get into the Barça side. For one thing, one of them would have the task of displacing Xavi. The other would have to try and replace one of the worlds current best DMs in Busquets.

Puyol is also one player that wouldn't be displaced from the Barça side so it's not as simple as selecting great Milan players and saying they'd get into the Barça team.

If we include the 1994 Milan side then Desailly and Savicevic would get close as well.

You're having a laugh about Busquets! Gullit and Rijkaard were a level or two above him.

I dunno. Busquets reads the game impeccably well. I still think Rijkaard and Gullit were better but not by much. The thing about all those Milan players though is would they actually make it into Guardiola's side? His team, skill aside, is a bunch of work horses.

    No.

Currently, Madrid are the only ones who come close.

Their style is tedious and horrible to watch. They have flashes of brilliance, but the spend an awful ot of their time in posession going sideways and backwards. They nearly put more value in passes than goals.

They are also arrogant moaners. When they don't win, it's all about the negative anti football from the other team. As if other teams aren't allowed to adopt a particular strategy.

Their technique is not what needs to be matched. Their technique is brutal in its simplicity. Pass and move. Watch them closely next time. They are all always moving and looking for a pass. It's the stuff you tell 8 year olds to do, yet the execution of this attitude is immensly poor. Watch 99 percent of teams and they'll have little or no movement.

You could argue that Messi is one of the best ever, but you'd find it hard to conclusively say he is THE best ever. The likes of Maradona, Pele, Zidane and Emile Heskey probably leave Messi with some ways to go. He is undoubtedly a phenomenal talent, but the mass media does overrate him, in that everything he does is "magic" or "genious", but when other players do it, it's what they should be doing (in the recent Clásico, Di Maria beat 4 players including Messi and Abidal put in a wonderful tackleto stop him. The ball squirted out to Messi and the commentators comments were about how good Messi played that by back tracking. Robbie Keane tracks back all the time and never gets called a genious).

They simply destroy teams? Like Sevilla and Getafe...

Teams in history that come close to them and usurp them, off the top of my head, Johann Cruyff's Holland, Holland of the late 80s, Milan of the late 80s and early 90s, Madrid of the early 2000s...

A blessing to all those football fans who hate physicality in football and wish to promote diving and theatrics, if that's what you mean.
