    Hi,

I really enjoy reading but hate spending ages in shops looking for a book I'd like to read, and my local library is pretty crap.

I would like to get a kindle so I could get books online at my leisure.

Could somebody explain to me how they work? Is it as simple as buy the ebook online and transfer it to the kindle?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

    its pretty simple.

you sign up to amazon and any time you want a book, you can either browse on your pc on the amazon website, or on your kindle and buy the book you want (it's just a couple of clicks to purchase once it's set up) and amazon will wirelessly send it to your kindle, where you can open it up and read it, simple as that.

There are lots of out-of-copyright free books out there also.

    eg.
    http://www.gutenberg.org/

You can plug it into the pc - it appears like a usb key and you just copy across the books. Kindle supports a whole load of ebook formats.

surprisingly enough it doesn't actually support very many formats at all natively, but you can convert just about any format easily enough and sync it to your kindle using calibre ebook manager which is free.
