I think there's only a 6.01 on RTÉ on Christmas Day. Usually only one news in English and one in Irish the entire day if I remember previous years correctly.

I shall have a box of tissues at the ready. Love the woman!!

i think RTE merge the 6pm and 9pm news on XMAS Day and just have one bulletin about 845 if memory serves me right. Anyone got an RTE Guide???

She has to. Because she's the hero RTE deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So she'll leave because she can take it. Because she's not our hero. She's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.

Many of us have grown up watching Anne on the telly. I for one will miss her, she was a consummate professional. I hope that she doesn't disappear off our TV sets for good.

Here are a few pictures of Anne down through the years.

I don't know what TV Guide ye are looking at.

Anne will be on at 8.50pm for her farewell performance.

Sad to see her go, one of the best Newsreaders around.

Maybe you did not grow up with her on the TV every night? I know it might sound weird. But I am going to miss her like mad.

I genuinely don't get why people are looking forward to her leaving. She was a complete professional, always very serious - this is the way the news should be. If you want brainless drivel, watch Fox News.

She'll be missed, that's for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 635 ✭✭✭inabina

So people can someone confirm the times of all news bulletins tomorrow? Just want to be sure I dont miss her. Someone said 6.01 and someone else said 8.50?

I wonder will she wear a Newbridge Knives and forks necklace:D

Best of luck in your retirement Anne and thanks for your professional approach to the news down the years..you're up there with Cockburn and Mitchell as one of the greats of news readers.

Indeed a sad day. I think she looks better now than 30yrs ago! I've had the pleasure of meeting the fine lady a couple of times, really funny, witty, down to earth and a dockers sense of humour, and a really filthy laugh:D
    We'll miss you girl!

Think it's pension related. She gets more if she leaves now. Strange for her not to be there. But never saw the attraction myself.

I know she's supposed to be good craic, but have heard from former colleagues she was difficult to work with. Perhaps they were jealous. :)

Often saw her in the Shelbourne within 10-15 mins of the news ending. Came to the conclusion the RTE news studio was upstairs in the Shelbourne. Very stylish lady with a bit of a roving eye.

the legacy of an rte dinosaur finally comes to an end. judging by her lifespan, we can look forward to another 20 years of ryan tubridy and an unknown number of years of pat kenny, since he is a cyborg

    FROM THE RTE WEBSITE

RTÉ newsreader Anne Doyle has read her final broadcast tonight, exactly 33 years to the day since she first appeared on national television.

Anne Doyle felt it was the right time to move on She read an eight-minute main evening news bulletin at 8.50pm, shorter and earlier than usual because of the Christmas schedule.

The broadcast ended with a special report which looked back at her long and distinguished career at Montrose.

Among those to pay homage to her were Taoiseach Enda Kenny, broadcaster Gay Byrne and Dustin the Turkey.

RTÉ Director General, Noel Curran, has also paid tribute to her. He said: "Anne Doyle has for many years been one of the most familiar faces and voices on RTÉ's services and is in the front rank of the public's affections.

"While always reading the News with detachment and authority, she has evident warmth which the public has instinctively recognised.

"Anne has been a vital and dedicated member of our News team, while always remaining recognisably and very much herself. She will be missed by the public and we will miss her."

Managing Director of RTÉ News and Current Affairs, Cillian de Paor, said of his newsroom colleague: "This is genuinely the end of an era in our newsroom. Anne's on-screen professionalism has made her a favourite with our audience for many years.

"We know her for other things - for her wit, her lively personality, her legendary loyalty to friends, her meticulousness and her formidable skills in argument. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís."

Anne recounted some of the many highlights of her newsreading career with some close colleagues who had dropped in specially to the station following the broadcast and summed her up her long career by saying that: "I've had a wonderful time here in RTÉ and I will miss it hugely, but it feels like the right time to move on.

"I will be 60 in January and there are many exciting projects ahead. I wish all my good friends and colleagues in the newsroom, with whom I have so enjoyed working for over 30 years, every happiness as I take my leave for the final time this evening.

Anne is originally from Ferns, Co Wexford, and is the youngest of seven children.

An Arts graduate from UCD, she first worked as a librarian, then in the Consular Service area of the Department of Foreign Affairs, before joining RTÉ as a newsreader in 1978.

Her interests include animals, particularly cats; literature, poetry, theatre and show business.

eileen dunne leading the tribute at the end , was that a sign she's taking over from ann?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,122 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Whoa, all these years Ive thought Eileen Dunne and Ann Doyle were the same person, I watched the tribute there and was going to say it was a bit weird that Ann said goodbye then a prerecorded clip of her comes on where she says 'not so fast Ann' to herself but then I read Calex's post there and realised they were 2 separate people. Thats a weird one, thats why my family laughed at me at 9pm.
