If I going to get a taxi I don't want to be driven by someone that is shouting into their phone in some African dialect, doesn't know where they're going and has change when I pull out a €20.

Some of the soundest taxi drivers I've had have been Indian, Chinese and Eastern European. The African lads have just made a bad name for themselves and its well deserved.
Spot on. If i have to get a cab anywhere i would rather have a driver who has a good command of the English language and knows where he is going in the city.

I think it's safe to say if someone punched an accountant in the face it would be a cause for celebration. They are vile people.

Although to be honest you'd have to be terribly unlucky if you asked for a taxi to take you into Dublin and the African taxi driver ended up taking you to Durban by mistake.

Aye, I remember the race hate gang attacks in Temple Bar in July and the killing of ****tabey in 2010.

As usual "Racist Ireland" means "Racist Dubs beats up black taxi drivers".

yes all countries have racism but i do think the irish is a little bit worse than some other countries generally bhut its hard to measure and that said we dont seem to have the same problems with large organised groups of neo nazis that some other european countries seem to have which is really good.

As someone who isnt racist i find it ereally frustrating and feel i encounter it regularly.

The reason it's not organised in this country is because the culture is too parochial and immigration is brand new.

how many people on this forum can honestly say there has been a black person in their home?

I saw on the 9 o clock news last night that Chap from Pakistan that was actually leaving Ireland due to abuse he got. Felt sorry for him. He seemed deeply upset and hurt. Tis sad considering were sending many or our own of abroad. I hope they dont get that kind of welcome

2 guys didn't know where D'Olier St was (both coming from elsewhere in the City Centre)

Surprised our government have not introduced a Knowledge-style exam here in our cities. A revenue opportunity just sitting there ignored, one that would produce a useful public dividend.
Aah you'll be seeing no black lads in the Wesht of Ireland so you don't

I'm thinking of that scene in Dances with Wolves where the Indian chief asks Costner's character how many more white men will arrive and he tells him - more than there are stars in the sky! :)

Racism is big in the UK news of late with the Suarez and Stephen Lawrence stories. The boom years immigration has changed the profile of our society so that it has big potential to become an issue here too. It is an ugly thing.
On one hand - the tendency toward inductive reasoning (from the particular case to a general conclusion) is something the evolution has given us to survive. Our ancestors luckily didn't say to themselves - maybe this sabre-tooth tiger mightn't be so bad - let's give him a chance.
On the other hand, in your treatment of your fellow human being - this is base thinking and we must strive to rise above it. If a coloured* lad wrongs you one day, it is not fair to make assumptions about all people whose skin is coloured from that point onward. You rise above your base nature by not going to the toilet whilst walking down the street don't you? The same applies to how you evaluate people and percieve physical traits or background. It is precisely in this where the racists fail in their own humanity.

*glad to read of that gent in the article describing himself as such - makes a mockery of the PC chastisement of Alan Hansen for using a word that was never a pejorative to me.

The answer you will find amongst most irish people to this situation is that in pakistan and irish person would get abuse, even though they know nothing of pakistan.

    That the standard in ireland.

really? described a black person as coloured has no racial implications to you? By describing someone as coloured you are basically lumping all non-whites into a bracket. Really nice. Whites and non-whites, that's the division.

I don't buy the excuse that it was fine in the past. Hanging black people was fine in the past.

I know it's only one man's story, but I've seen it so many times, people skipping taxis because of the driver being black. It's just pathetic, I feel sorry for them.

Race may have little to do with it. I've been in plenty of non local taxi's that haven't a clue where they are going and chances are if I'm in a taxi im not familiar with the city so don't ask me for directions.

Also some people are racist, it's not nationality specific.

Yeah you're probably right. It's just where I live now everyone is black and there doesn't seem to be any issues so it made me sad to see that going on at home. Can we close this thread mods?

    Back to racist ireland:
My mate had a thai girlfriend and when she was over here he brought her on a trip over to the west of ireland. He said the abuse they got in pubs was so bad he ended up staying at home in the evenings. He wasn't a 60 year old with a 16 year old girlfriend, they were both around 25.

I'm not sure that he'd be any safer if he was white & Irish.
I drove cabs for a while back in the '90's and was seriously attacked twice and a few minor incidents. Didn't make the news though - why? Because I'm white and Irish and it doesn't make good news because it happens every week of the year. I could tell stories all day of Irish drivers who suffered serious assault. If the attacker isn't shouting racist abuse it will just be some other form of abuse. There are violent, irrational, angry so & so's in every country. I've sympathy for this chap as I've sympathy for any victim. I'm not convinced that an Irish national is any safer on the streets than a foreign national and if you spend any time researching it online I doubt you'll find any different. Another example I'll give you is that both my sons, aged late teens, have been violently assaulted on more than one occasion. If my lads were foreign the attacks would be chalked up as racial - fact is the thugs would have assaulted anyone.

agreed. I too know a local taxi that nearly lost his eye because an irish student did not want to pay his fare. police called - report taken, but never followed up. Instead of screaming about people being racist to taxi man, lets start screaming about people attacking ALL taximen. or again can the irish taxi man be abused and attacked and thats okay. time to deal in reality folks and less of the cliches about racism

I was in a pub in clare visiting relatives a few years ago.

One guy was there with his pregnant asian wife.

My cousin and friends were sneering at him and muttering insults.

I thought it was pathetic and asked them why.

They said he used to hang around with them until he got that mail order bride.

To think those two people would be bringing a mixed race child into that community.

Geniunely honest story, that is what they told me at the time.

No but if you're worrying when your girlfriend is getting a taxi you really need to chill out. Women can look after themselves these days you know.

One white guy headbutting a black cab driver a racist population does not make.

Yes, I agree. I am certain that the vast majority of people in Ireland are still fair-minded and mannerly. Unfortunately, as in every country, we have our share of ignorant, small-minded people, who behave like the sh1tty little creeps that they are. One has to wonder what virtues or qualities they have that make them feel superior to a person with black skin. The Nigerian taxi driver in the news article, for example, is an accountant; in other words, probably better educated than most if not all of those thick yobs from the arse end of Clare who refuse to get into his taxi.

Apart from a problem of yobs, who demonstrate their yobbishness in numerous ways that include racist behaviour, we clearly have a major scumbag problem and a justice system that seems incapable of dealing with it.

Thus a person with over a dozen previous convictions viciously assaults a man who is just working to earn a living, causes him grievous bodily harm and yet receives a slap-on-the wrist sentence that will have him back on the streets again by mid-summer. There was no mention in the newspaper report of any obligation to compensate his victim for the medical expenses and loss of earnings caused. How long will it be before this thug assaults someone else, and possibly kills him or her?

The great pity is that our minority of racist scum are blackening the reputations of all of us Irish people and do not make life any easier for us who spend a lot of time abroad.:)

I use taxis a lot in Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn and would never dream of taking any other than the first one in the rank. If I were to skip one because the driver was not white, in all probability the others would refuse to take me, as I would have clearly demonstrated that I was a racist, troublemaker or just a problematic sh1t.

I think personaly that its a disgrace, Im of mixed race half black half white. I was out one night with my white boyfriends friends we were trying to get home from a night out there was only black taxi drivers so they avoided getting in the car they chose to stay outside in the cold rather than getting in the taxi. It made me sick I had never seen that before. I thought these people were lovey and genuine until I saw that. It made me think inside everyone there seems to be a racist streak. But why ?

limerickbanter, are you still in a relationship with the boyfriend who has racist friends?

Unfortunetly it's in most irish people, especially in the direction of your location (if your username is an accurate indication).

There are some people on this very thread that would judge you based entirely on your skin colour. Your father or mother, whomever is black, would get even worse because 'they can't speak english and over charge for services'.

it's absolutely disgusting and you have my sympathy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,770 ✭✭✭Bottle_of_Smoke

People skip the Black taxi drivers because you can't see them as well at night and you think the taxi is empty. :pac:

Really though, Ireland just is not the racist hellhole every white knight tosser looking to prove how anti-racist he/she is, claims it to be. If it was then foreigners would have left/stopped coming here long ago. You don't see many whites moving to South Africa in their droves.

There's a right wing "movement" trying to get going though. They went to the Brit embassy the other day to rally support for Emma West.

    Four people showed up.

Rise above it. My little cousin is 13 now and of mixed race and lives in a fairly dodgy part of Dublin. I hope she doesn't encounter any of this nonsense.
