Data recovery from a flash card

    Hi folks

My mam's friend got a very sentimental picture today and accidentally deleted it from her digital camera. It was the type of picture that can't be recreated as it was taken with a high-profile person etc.

Is there any way to recover files from an SD/XD/MicroSD card (not sure what card it is at this stage) in a similar way to recovering data from an NTSC HDD or is it gone altogether? I've told my Mam to tell her not to take any more snaps for fear of overwriting. My gut tells me with flash memory it's gone, and I told her same, but I said I'd ask if anyone knows anything here.

Cheers in advance for any advice!

Youve done the right thing, and there is a very very high chance all is ok provided no more data was written to the card. There is an excellent tool called PhotoREC which you can use to recover it, or even Recuva. Both are excellent free toold but I prefare PhotoREC. Make sure to never recover the item onto the same device obviously :)
A bit more advice, Try using a Card Reader and not the actual Camera to do this recovery. Cameras may write data to the card on turning on

Take the card out of the camera for a start to prevent any further overwriting.
Download this handy piece of software, install it, scan your flash card only NOT your c drive and you should see the file listed in the pane to the right amongst others that have been deleted over time.:)

Cheers folks, will try PhotoREC or advise her to do so. Looks like the best of the bunch.

Didn't think this was at all possible with flash memory :) Hopefully it's an SD as I;ve no other readers.

I'd reccomend you try it, unless shes good with computers. PhotoREC is very good but may be complicated for people unsure of working via command line (its not a command line app but doesn't have a fancy GUI either), Recuva is more "idiot proof" in this department.
Flash media is the same as magnetic media when it comes to data storage, deleting a file you mark it for overwriting, which means chance of recovery is greater if nothing written to it since ;)

Got the file recovered...Recuva is brilliant, all the piriform stuff is class. Had ccleaner and defraggler already.

    Cheers for the help!

SD card in my wife's camera became completely unreadable a few months ago. The only way I could access is was by formatting it (through card reader connected to PC)

Used both those packages and got all the photos back. Can't remember which did it, but one saw nothing and the other saw everything. And that's not the first time that happened to me. I use a few other packages too when these both fail, or when I'm not satisfied with the results...

I prefer to use get data back. They have one for NTFS and Fat, the programe itself can put missing files back into folders rather than just having a list of files names and not knowing where to put them.

The reason I love the piriform stuff is the pure ease of use - I could do a defrag, recover a few files and clean my entire computer of needless ****e while probably having to only click next about 10 times if I felt like it.

Can't beat that sort of handiness, especially when it analyses what needs to be done intelligently and thus eliminates the need for any advanced and more complicated settings really. I suppose for more difficult recoveries there is better software but tbh I took one look at both reccomended programs, saw the second was Piriform and immediately clicked download, such is the level of my satisfaction with defraggler especially.
