The first public admission of a review of the DSP's Free Travel Scheme...

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/in-firing-line-for-savage-cuts-young-old-and-vulnerable-2982581.html
Some of the most politically tricky proposals contained in the report relate to Joan Burton's Department of Social Protection.

In a potentially politically explosive proposal regarding free travel for pensioners, the report says "the ongoing priority of the free travel scheme . . . in the wider expenditure context must be questioned".

It also says "the dead weight in the system" should be removed.

What the article fails to outline is the fact of the review being ongoing for quite some time now and of an increasing funding problem associated with it......

Now for a more detailed explanation of what the DSP regard as "Dead Weight".......:) :)

The process is now definitely "in train"...:(

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

It has been mooted for some time now. I dunno how the decent people on the free travel scheme are going to react to this news. Even my own mother is on this scheme now for a few years.

She went on it due to being knocked down by a car in Phibsboro when she was very young. She was unable to drive a car and now she relies on public transport for her lifetime. She was never wheelchair reliant and she is still able to walk tg.

Even, a neighbour of mine was in a very serious car accident years before I was born. He was a very smart decent fellow to begin with, he is also still to able to walk, but, his head still work quite badly when he even think's about it.

The free travel scheme should be kept therefore IMO, for people who have severe disability, either able bodied or not.

she obviously managed well enough without it for long enough.

There should be no free travel for anyone, concessions yes, but everyone should be paying something, even 50c or €1 for a trip, the free system is just open to far too much abuse. Proper holographic ID must be presented to avail also, not some maggoty old bit of cardboard that you've coloured blue and scribbled on.

    .
only when he thinks about it?

this week I've already witnessed 3 seperate people getting on at one stop only to get off at the next, and one of these stops was only 100m away.
each time they were the only one getting on and off at each stop.
if that's not a reason to change it to concession-based travel, I don't know what is.
