Under 24 cannot get medical card

I am absolutely fuming this morning, after I received a phone call from the HSE stating I am not eligible for a medical card on the grounds I earn to LITTLE.

I am a 24 year old female on job seekers allowance, renting accommodation. Due to the fact I am receiving 144 on Jobseekers allowance I am not able to get a medical card. Apparently, the limit is 184.

This means all people on the dole 24 and under who are claiming since the new age restrictions cannot get a medical card? This is a disgrace.

Has anyone else experienced this? I have googled and I cannot see anyone else talking about this.

There was a thread in this forum over a month ago where a number of people posted on this very subject. You could try highlighting it yourself by writing to the Dept., and Minister etc., or try the Ombudsman (woman). But talking to Joe might be the best option. It's a real catch 22.

I completely sympathize with your situation. I have experienced the exact same scenario. I applied for a medical card, being 22 and on JSA and was refused for the same reason (having too little income!! less than 184 p/w).
Strangely enough like you said there isn't that many people talking about this at least from google searching. But simple logic has to dictate that there are quite a few others like us who just because they are 24 or under simply cannot get a medical card.
I had a brief discussion about this last september in another thread : http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=74154747
As I mentioned in that thread, the bottom line is : if you are 18-24 - no medical card for you because you earn less(thanks to an even more nonsensical ageist JSA rate). Your 25yrs or over neighbour (extra 40 quid income thanks to being a bit older than you) gets a medical card because you know they are more human than you and need health care more...even though you have less income than them.
Needless to say friends/family couldn't believe this situation. Fortunately for me I undertook an internship recently which has pushed me over the 184 thereby getting the card.

Op could your parents apply for a card and name you as a dependant? I knnow you've moved out. Other than that, write to the media / minister.
