Just being outdoors , I think is the main one. Seemingly that isn't "acceptable" today by both youths or their parents.

Seen a video of me when I was a kid, in the f*cking swimming pool. My da was actually allowed the video camera in to the pool, the place was packed too and I was in the baby pool. You'd do time for that kinda thing now.

Recording Music/Films on tapes, no one gave a rats in the 80s/90s

Soon the modern equivalent will get you a nasty fine & jail time.

Was only talking about this to a friend last night. She spent a year in NY on a transfer with the company she was working for and was saying that strangers chatted away goodo as a group on the subway every day while here everyone's ram rod straight and silent listening to their ipod on the bus.

Not wearing seatbelts in the back
Being let walk out of the school grounds to go buy the teachers snack and tayto at break time
Staying all day in your neighbours house, including having meals - when you were never even invited

    Thumbing at the crossroads

Calling kids over to your front door and giving them money to buy you cigarettes

For reg as a number plate

Schoolyard football games and even rugby games in the ballcourt. We'd be battered and cut after lón but aye we were happy.
    Compo culture ended that

Order a phone line from Telecom Éireann and at best you'd get it six weeks later.
UPC are superstars in comparison to those bad old days

Drink driving, twas the done thing and nobody cared

Smoking in the car with the kids. Yeah it still goes on but you get filthy looks from others

when having a pound in your pocket would buy you enough sugar filled sweets to render you diabetic.

Kids hanging out the back of tractors and your Dad driving along
If you slip you go straight under the wheels of the trailer but sure it was normal to me, kids don't see danger

Putting children on top of a trailer of square bales for some extra weight.
Bouncing around way up there with your brothers, dodging tree branches and loving it :D

Sitting on the bonnet of a jeep as it was going down a bumpy field, or alternatively standing on the rear step plate, holding onto the spare wheel for dear life.

Leaving the house at 8 am with a packed lunch and a few bob for a treat to go cycling in the country with mates for the day.
    Insert swimming/fishing/camping above too.

Being put on a bus into Dublin to go to the cinema.

All done regularly when I was in primary school.

Not sure this is fair. Was outside in the garden earlier and there were around 30 kids playing football on the green in front of the house.

Going swimming in the local resevoir, pi$$ing in same, then having a big healthy glass of water (from same resevoir) when you went home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,943 ✭✭✭wonderfulname

Leaving the house at dawn and not getting back til dusk, perfectly fine for a child in the 90's but I'd say if I switched off my phone for that long now people would go spare.

Turning up at peoples houses with no prior warning.

    I miss life without mobiles...

Fighting. I remember it was all taken with a pinch of salt, I'd say if a young fella (under 12 I mean) was in a fight these days the school would have him confronting anger issues in front of a counsellor.

    Swimming in the river
Being encouraged to get a "good colour" (ie lobster) when at the seaside for the day
    Having buck teeth
Eating "Space dust" (Imagine all the e additives!!)
Getting slapped by teacher and then thumped at home as well, even if you were in the right
The "nit nurse" coming to school to check us all one by one.

Does that still happen in schools? :)

I remember it well, all getting lined up and the nurse checks us all

If you have nits you get some piece of paper about the sheep dip shampoo which you took home to the Mammy

No big deal, is it unacceptable nowadys

Yeah, we used to do that in secondary school.

Probably the maddest story I've ever heard about "back in the day" my Uncle in law (RIP) used to borrow a mini-bus so he could drive old people to mass on a Sunday, people who had no other way to get there.

He was 14 or 15 at the time ...

This would have been in the 1950s.

Being a bit odd. Now you're labelled with something with a few letters. Sometimes that's a positive, but not always.

Also I remember when the teacher would give you money to go down to the shop to get the paper in primary school. Don't think you'd be allowed to let a kid walk to the shop on their own anymore now.
