    Hi folks,

I have a giant rapid 3 that I use for a weekly training spin. I was thinking on upgrading the wheels to improve my speed. Can anyone give an idea of what would be the ballpark cost of a set that would offer a decent improvement over the stock wheels? Thanks

    Why wheels?

Cassette and tyres is what id go for first.

    I have the same bike!

I just figured lighter wheels would be the most effective starting point.. Sorry but I am a bit of a noob when it comes to roadbikes.

I have already swapped the tyres out for 23c detonators.
How could the cassette offer an upgrade and ballpark cost?

    Thanks for the reply

Sorry, should have stated, I don't plan on racing, I only have the one roadbike

Rotating mass 1st always.. Wheels! Yes.

Rolling resistance of tyres is still debatable given the parameters eg pressure, surface, ride weight etc!!

How would a new cassette help??

    Wheels.. Yes

These are probably the same wheels that would come on a defy 3.. The bike cost me 400 second hand so I wouldn't be interested in spending massive money on a set.

A good set of wheels will cost you close to what you paid for the bike, but then you can sell your current wheel set and recoup some of the expense. I would try to source a second hand Mavic Ksyrium Equipes or Elites.

for the price of a decent set of wheels you could get a road bike with drop bars, which would be more suitable to going fast compared to a sit up hybrid. Just my 2c.

I never thought that is actually a hybrid. Yeah, an upgrade to any road bike will make more sense and you will pay less than for a wheelset ;).

Ok, yes 400 would be too much to spend to make sense. I will keep an eye on the second hand market for those names mentioned and if I got a few quid back for the stock wheels it might not cost too much.

I hear ye re a better roadbike but any bike upgrades at the moment will be on a full susser.
The rapid is plenty good for a once weekly road spin at the moment but a full on roadbike is on the cards at some point as I do enjoy the road spins.

    Thanks for the replies
