Confirmed. Sign on door and all stock removed from their lot. Staff were told at 11 on Friday the 15th and it closed it's doors after 27 years trading. My thoughts are with all the staff and hope they find employment shortly. Nearest ford dealer to sandyford is now fitzpatricks in bray and south Dublin ford.

South Dublin Ford, are they not also RIP?
I bought my in car in South Dublin Ford, then used get my car serviced in Esmonde, then Appleyard. Its service history is a record of the decline of Ford south of the liffey!

South Dublin Ford is closed, here's a link.

Can't find anything on the internet about Appleyard though.

Edit: It seems South Dublin Ford is now reopened as Rathfarnham Ford

What is the problem here? There is business to be done in this area, perhaps not as much as at one time, but still quite a bit. Are these businesses failing because of legacy issues, rents, loans taken out during the boom etc?

When South Dublin Ford closed they had huge debts, I'd assume (I'm open to correction) that like a lot of car dealers, they spent a large amount of money on Showrooms during the boom. Combine that with a lower turnover, and owing tax to the revenue and you have a recipe for disaster. Also, ford seem to have been one of the larger creditors, so maybe they had too much stock, as well as being unable to make payments on credit.

Edit: It's a very difficult climate to operate a business in at the moment, trying to reduce your costs can be a very difficult thing to do. So I hope this doesn't sound like I'm criticising anyone, unfortunately it was keeping up with the jones during the boom and some businesses are now paying the price.

Yes Ford has a fairly decent model line at the moment, good low tax engines and popular models like the new Focus and Fiesta, would have thought they would sell well. When HB Denis Volvo dealership went I put a lot of their problems down to poor model choice to sell.

South Dublin Ford (Whitechurch Road) reopened as Rathfarnham Ford a few months back.

Sorry to see another one bite the dust. Thankfully it isn't getting like a ghost town down there yet.

Haven't bought anything from Appleyard for years, used to get Peugeots there, would have thought someone could make a run of the Ford franchise in that area.

P.s. Tallaght Ford are still open. Always better to deal with than SDFC.

I was thinking that as well - if a dealership in a car shopping destination area with a franchise that is in the top three in terms of car sales can't survive it says a whole lot about the state of the industry.

I would have thought 2 dealerships for any particular (or even for most) Marque in Dublin would be plenty? One Northside and One Southside.

Doesn't really work for the likes of Audi, yet alone the volume brands.

Ford would still like a 2nd dealer in Tallaght purely on population size.

I work in the motor industry and deal with most the major garages. Maxwell motors for instance lost the BMW branding because they refused to pay the 1 mil to do up their showrooms to the standard BMW wanted. The manufacturers put massive and unrealistic pressure on their dealership network on registration of new vehicles which creates a massive loss in earnings.

I bought a 08 Ford Mondeo from them in March of this year and have had to return it to them twice for repairs. I contacted them this morning to ask for them to repair it again this weekend as the problem hadn't been fixed on the last occassion and I got the voicemail stating that they have ceased trading. Will my year-long warranty be honoured by other Ford dealers?

Nope, it's not a manufacturers warranty.

Thanks for the response. So, in theory, the warranty dies with the company?

Came across rathfarnham ford recently while walking my dog. I was surprised that they had reopened as they do not show up on sites like carsireland. Their website is www.rathfarnhamford.ie. They had a great selection of cars the day I called in

They have a big forecourt and are now parking the cars on the foothpath.
