Macbook Pro Retina Availability

I've been trying to get my hands on one of the new Macbook Pro Retinas announced last week but as yet have had no luck.

None of the CompuB stores in and around Dublin have them in stock for sale, and only one or two of them have them as display models. The Apple Store in Belfast hasn't received any either and has no idea when they are likely to.

Apparently there aren't really any in the UK either, and last I heard none of the main Apple Stores in London had them either.

Does anyone have any concrete information about actual availability of them in stores somewhere in Ireland ?

Apple stores over here (Canada) don't have them for sale yet.

There's probably going to be patchy availability for a while. Just order through the online store, that way it will ship for definite in 3-4 weeks.

It'll be a while before shops have a proper supply of them IMO. Your best bet is to order online.

Would really love one of these, i just can't justify spending that amount of money on a laptop

The fastest way for you to get one is to buy it online from apple, or order one from compuB. It'll still take 3-4 weeks to get it, but it'll still be faster than getting it in the shops. I'd give it about 5 weeks before they're readily available in the shops.

I've ordered my built to order one last week in compub and they told me 3-4 weeks before any model comes in, and not just my bto model.

    Quite a bit...... :(

Specs are: 2.6GHz core, 16GB ram, 512GB ssd, it's the high end model with the ram upgraded.

I heard that Apple didn't expect such a big demand for it, which is why they didn't have enough of them to ship out to stores etc.

Also heard that right now, you're only likely to pick up one from the online store, rather then a local store. Personally, I'd much rather buy it in a store, mainly because then I get it straight away instead of 3-4 weeks shipping!

Fair play. Hopefully mountain lion is out at that stage so you can see the hi res screen in action.

I already have mountain lion, it's not all that better to be honest. But I can't wait to view the retina screen :D only another 2/3 weeks before it's delivered :(

was in a shop CompuB in Blanchardstown (Dublin) .... yesterday and I kind of stumped the sales guy.

we were discussing the merits of the retina display, he was saying its fantastic great colours/clarity etc etc ...then I posed a situation.

I work as a photographer ...take pic, put onto retina display laptop, caption send to newspaper ..... however newspaper doesn't have retina display so image is not displayed in all its glory ....newspaper send image to printers who also do not have retina display ...and cannot appreciate my image.....so ...whats the point in my purchasing a 3K laptop when a 1K laptop will do the job !!

I was not overly impressed with the retina display and was wondering - whats the point unless everyone has one - suppose its like watching something in HD - I have a CRT tv and will have until it breaks, so watching someone tell me its so much better watching it in HD .... until everyone watches in HD and the next fad comes out (3D will probably be skipped over unless it can be produced without the glasses)

A printer will be printing at a higher resolution than the retina will be. The printer doesn't need to appreciate your image anyway.

Also, if a photo is good, it's good. An extra bit of resolution won't make or break an image.

I don't take photo's (that I edit) but would being able to see the image at super zoomed levels not allow you to edit to your full capabilities and not be restricted by a lower resolution of your current monitor?

    + 1

The high res screen is beneficial for you. It is better for editing. This benefit is indirectly seen by end users.

I understand what you say about HD tv. I said the same for a long time until I actually seen a HD program. It was a football match and the clarity is unbelievable.

I got the pro retina mac. and have noticed exactly what u say also.
Not until u go off the apple website and go onto a normal website do u notice the drop in sharpness.
Editing pictures is done much clearer.... u can actually get a better sharpness to your pic.
All in all its a fantastic machine which Im glad I forked out for

If you don't NEED a new MBP, I would take AnandTech's advice and wait for until next year for Intel's Haswell CPU architechture which will make it's way into the next revision of the retina MBP. They will also likely offer a higher capacity SSD in the low end model too.

Read the superb in-depth review here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6023/the-nextgen-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-review
The logical thing to do, if you’re the owner of a recent (2010/2011) MacBook Pro, is to wait until next year at the minimum. Haswell should bring a significant performance increase (particularly on the processor graphics front) and you’ll get it in the same chassis as what you see today.

Most users however don’t upgrade annually. If you have an older MacBook Pro, the rMBP offers all of the benefits of last year’s Sandy Bridge upgrade but in a much better package, and with vastly improved thermal characteristics. If you fall into this group, the upgrade is a no-brainer. I won’t lie, the next two years are going to be tough. Haswell is looking very good, and if Intel can pull off 14nm on time, Broadwell will be even more impressive from a graphics standpoint. You can always make the argument to hold off on an upgrade as there’s almost always something better around the corner. In my opinion you really can’t go wrong picking any of the next three years to upgrade.

I had one on order but cancelled it. Can't justify the spend at the moment, but next year I will. It's either a retina MBP or go back to windows with a custom Clevo gaming laptop!

I didn't think they would have them for awhile as when I went to their opening day in Dundrum they said it would be a couple weeks, also kinda sucked because I was waiting on a cheque to clear so couldn't order it on that day to receive the 10% off.

By chance yesterday I was on the Compub Twitter page and seen they said they had them in stock, pretty happy so far.

They've had them in nearly a week now in their shops. I was told that my BTO could be in this week or early next week, last friday. I'm hoping for a phone call sometime soon :D

Fingers crossed you pick it up soon, now I just got to sell my old Macbook to offset the cost of the new one somewhat.
