Step 1: Convince the missus that I NEED another bike

I got a Cube Agree SL at the end of January and that's my main bike. I also have a three year old GT Aggressor mountain bike that I use to commute when the weather suits. I'd like to take the commuting up a notch, do it more often and ditch the heavy bike.

I've an old steel frame MBK Triathlon that I had when I was fifteen. Back then I went everywhere on it, some long spins too for a lad my age (70+ miles). However, it's been lying in my parents' garage since the early 90s and needs serious refurbishment. I brought it down to my LBS for their opinion and they believe that it can be done, how much it'll cost is up to me. Tallaght Powder Coating have quoted me €120 for two colours and to get this MBK to where I want it could be another €800...

Was looking around the LBS and chatting away when I noticed a Ridley Eos compact. €900 plus carrier, panniers and some mudguards and I'm good to go. Just need to convince the missus.

So what's the general opinion on this bike and am I missing anything?

Don't ask, tell her you need a new bike. End of story.

800e sounds like a lot to get an old bike up and running unless you're planning fairly massive upgrades.

Obviously I'm not suggesting you shouldn't buy a new bike, that would be blasphemy. But at the same time I don't like to think of old bikes rusting away in sheds unnecessarily.

If I were I'd take a look at the MBK, figure out what it needs (absolute minimum, you can pump in more money later when you're commuting on it full time and have sold you car). Then take a look on ebay, on the adverts section on here and maybe on a few of the UK forums such as retrobikes.co.uk and see how cheaply you could really get it up and running.

Otherwise, I'd be happy to give it a good home...

its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

    Monkeypants

Hollingsworths stillorgan have a special on the Ridgeback Platinum, complete with mudguards but no panniers. Nice spec and down from 1200 ish to €899.

Sure all women love a bargain:)

Yeah, make your body generate new soft tissue in the form of a sack which will contain two round spheres, blood vessels and nerves, it's simple to do.

Well then 'ask the missus' and let her make the call on it.

I must be one of the very lucky few, Mrs. Holyboy (Holygirl?!) has a lot more bikes and gear than me and pretty much insisted I get myself a road bike:)

Then you don't have one or all of the following:
    • Lots of bikes
    • A girlfriend / wife
    • Sex
I have all three and like to keep it that way, so I ask. Simple, nothing spineless, just makes sense really.

You have 2 ask in a round about way really. That's what I do. Eventually it seems like she is suggesting that you get a new bike ;)

If was in your position I'd love to do up the old bike. Couldn't see it costing 800 tho but that's just IMO

Go for it. Make it seem like her idea. Saving money on petrol, fitness etc

As the meerkats say simples :D

Presume you have joint finances otherwise  My boyfriend has about half a dozen bikes. I don't care what he does with his own money.

MMMM I think you are more at risk of getting them chopped off (though suspect a comment like that comes from someone who can't get a GF ;))

That's it exactly. For about six years now. However, I can pay for it over about three months or talk to the credit union.

Tell her you'd like to buy her an expensive piece of jewellery and when she says "you don't have to do that, Honey" say ok and go ahead and buy the bike.

What makes you think Malari is a woman?

She may go nuts at buying a bike and shelling out 800-900 all at once, doing up the bike is more fun, may take longer but easier to hide the amount you spend.
