THAI WARS : A new era for Irish Thai Boxing

The 24th of November 2012 will see the beginning of an exciting new televised era for Irish Thai Boxing when the inaugural Thai Wars comes to Dublin’s National Basketball Arena.

The Irish Muay Thai council sanctioned THAI WARS which will initially televised in 36 countries is joint venture between Thai Boxing stalwart and former Irish Middleweight Champion Paddy Clint of Chupasart Promotions and Ferguson Sports Group, the company behind Cage Contender one of Europe’s largest televised MMA promotions. Clint will look after all Thai Boxing related matters while Ferguson Sports will concentrate on promotion, production and broadcasting matters.

" I'm excited at the prospect of televising the Thai boxing talent Ireland has in its ranks to a global audience and all the attention that will generate. Thai Boxing folk are passionate about their sport and Ferguson Sports are passionate about producing great televised entertainment. Chupasart have been successfully promoting Thai Boxing events for a number of years and that when paired with what I bring to the table in terms of promotion and television will create something special

When I entered the MMA market there were one maybe two sporadic Irish broadcasts per year, we have changed that landscape. We now produce 15 or so programmes which when you take repeats into account means that we put Irish MMA on TV over 45 times per year in close to 100 countries. I am fully determined to make this the biggest thing to hit Irish Thai Boxing in the last decade. "
    – John Ferguson

Thai Wars plan to hold one event in 2012 followed by 4 events in 2013 with the most likely locations being Dublin and Belfast. The initial television deals will see the promotion broadcast in 36 countries with expansion to over 60 countries expected for the 2013 events.

“I am delighted to be involved in this venture with Ferguson Sports. After being involved in the sport for so many years its nice to see it getting it place on mainstream television and a lot more deserved publicity for the sport.

"I look forward to the challenge ahead, in not only promoting top level fights nights but also promoting the sport in Ireland and to pitting the best of the Irish against the rest of the world. Thai Wars scheduled for the 24th of November 2012 will not disappoint fight fans that’s for sure

Thanks to the IMC for all their help and support to date. Thanks also to John Ferguson for bringing me on board.”
    - Paddy Clint

Further details will be released in the coming weeks, in the mean time you can follow Thai Wars on twitter and Facebook

***** IRISH MUAY THAI COUNCIL STATEMENT *****

The Irish Muaythai Council (IMC) are the recognised governing body for Muaythai in Ireland and are responsible for the promotion and development of Muaythai in Ireland.

For a number of years the IMC have worked to improve the popularity of Muaythai in Ireland through promotions and competitions, and have been involved in the running of events both Nationally and Internationally. The IMC have now taken another step in the promotion of the sport by joining with one of the country's leading promoters John Ferguson and Muaythai coach Paddy Clint.

It is hoped that this joint venture will lead to some major Muaythai events been staged over the coming years in Ireland which will showcase the high standard of Muaythai in Ireland. This will increased the popularity of the sport and bring it in line with some of the more main stream sports in Ireland.

Thanks Jamie, your not a bad lad at heart... and what do you mean "good" friends... I thought we were more phone buddies at this stage :)

Thanks to Louth Thai for the chance of a crack at seans title. There are only a few lads in Ireland that I would think twice about before matching with my lads and Sean is one of them, very fit, very well schooled and always has his homework done.

I am just hoping I can do my homework better than him and Richie on the 24th.

More fights to be announced soon

Ahmmm 78kg I believe its set at jack I'v cut down on the jam donuts as of late ;) haha

I've seen talk to 2 different Thai councils in Ireland

Will there be fighters from both camps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 575 ✭✭✭chprt

    Apologies Myles and JF

I was given the wrong weight by someone... who is used to dealing in half hundred weight of spuds and not in kgs :)

The fight is set at 78.0kg

Jason - With out wanting to open a can of worms on this thread, as this thread is purely about the upcoming "Thai Wars" show

There is the IMC - Irish Muay Thai Council - A national governing body NGB, and therefore part of the Sports Council of Ireland, as such we then have to follow certain rules and regulations and met criteria set out by them.

There is a second group, for lack of a better name, who I will add, for various reasons are not part of the IMC.

Joining the IMC is straight forward, make your interest known and IMAC - Irish Martial Arts Committee, will take you through the process of it all. This is standard now as far as I know, you no longer apply to the NGB of the martial art group you wish to join but to IMAC themselves

    thanks Paddy

So folks, educate me a little if you will. Of the fights matched so far which are your picks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,672 ✭✭✭Peetrik

Meleady, Gannon, O'Mahoney, Doyle, not sure about the rest.

I would have said Culligan over Mulvaney before seeing Mulvaney against Ormond but I was impressed with him in that fight, less showboating and more striking maybe, should be a good scrap anyway.

    Thanks Pat

aint too many giving us a chance with Sean Hodgers

I dont want to comment on who I will think will win, as there might be a conflict of interests there, but I am very excited to put Irish Thai Boxers in the limelight, promoting the top Irish fighters, and putting Irish Thai Boxing on the telly.

A new era for Irish Muay Thai..

Looking forward to fighting on this! Lineup is shaping up to be a great night of fights. Looking forward to seeing Yodyut back in action! He's training hard for this fight and he is a very dangerous and entertaining fighter when he is fit! I have never seen hodger fight but I hear Yodyut is in for a tough fight.

Above is a clip of Yodyut in action against tim Thomas. That fight was at 67kg and Yodyut walks around at 65kg.
