Would an auction or private buy be my best on spending about 3k on a small van? Which would offer more value for money? As regards transit connects, partners, kangoo's,berlingo's etc etc which would be the most reliable or are the all pretty much the same?

Private or auction it really depends I prefer private sales. Also I would say a 1.5 dci kangoo would be the best of the above list. But they are all similar reliability wise they each have their own problems. If I was you I would buy one private and try and get a well minded van I know hard for 3k but if you look there is always good vans out there. Best of luck.

Get a Hiace bigger van I know but very dependable.

I had one for 4 years all that had to be done with it in that time was bushings new tyres x4 and wipers :D.

Hiace are a good van but way way harder on diesel than a kangoo berlingo so if the op doesn't need a big van there is no point in getting. My dad had a hiace and it was grand but he thinks it was the worst out of all the vans we had. It was just so hard on diesel 25 mpg we have had 4 kangoos 2 berlingos 1 dispatch 1 Trafic and 1 master 1 vavaro in the last 8 years hiace was the worst of all in terms of fuel economy by far.

Thanks for replies, a Hiace is to big for what i need, suppose mpg is an important factor as i will be doing a fair bit of driving.

do not buy at auction, you will not get to test the van propely,

    avoid reno's and such....

i always recommend a good transit connect, good 1.8 tdci unit in them, and a solid van with cheap servicing and parts cost.

    this looks decent...

Renault are as reliable as ford we have had a fair few Renault commercials. We currently have a January 2006 Renault master from new 200k km on it the only thing it need in over 6 years outside of a service is 1 wheel bearing. It passes the doe every year. Even bushings are original. Clutch and gearbox are original and perfect. 100 euro and 1 wheel bearing in 6 years and someone said avoid renault i don't know how a ford can top that. If you mind the van it will generally not go wrong.

A kangoo etc will only give trouble if it hasnt been looked after and that goes for the connect's too ive seen some dogs

if you can get a minty berlingo with the 1.9 diesel it will give you little trouble
engine around for years and simple and reliable
    can get 800kms on a tank (90euro)

this i say from experience, am not a mechanic, but my friend who looks after it for me is and he says it will be a lot less trouble than the newer hdi engines as its not a succeptable to damage from bad or dirty diesel

maybe thats scaremongering talk, i dunno, i buy fuel from my local maxol and big brand ststions only and the filter has always been clean on services
