I am in Dublin 5... don't get to use my current club mid week so chances of maintaining or even lowering handicap is limited.

I need a hand picking new club that I will get use out of during the summer. Near by so I can get to it in evenings after work and No entrance fee is essential!! Please do offer some opinions and suggestions, preferably from experience... but any advise is welcomed

Many thanks in advance for any help!

If I were you I'd choose Corballis near Donabate. Great selection of membership options. Probably only 20 minutes drive from Dublin 5.

what about Sutton? Its only 9 holes, but its dead handy and you'd definitely get to make use of it...

As a roganstown member i would recommend Roganstown, Comps every sat and sun and midweek. Teams entered in most inter club competitions.
No major difficulty getting on the time sheet for the weekend comps.

@Bluefoam are you a member? its a logical choice... wondering what traffic is like clontarf road in rush hour too?

@ RGS where exactly is Roganstown... how are the practice facilities? trying to calculate how long it would take to drive to it from my place

I'm not a member, but have played there occasionally as a guest of a member. Nice course, good clubhouse, awesome location...

Traffic is usually fine in the evenings... as slow as the coast road gets, it generally moves... The junction to get out to the Howth peninsula can have its fair bit of traffic, but theres a couple of side streets that help avoid that...

Just joined roganstown. It is just outside Swords. they have 2 big putting greens a chipping green and a bunker so a decent short game area. They have plans to put in another green and bunker beside the grass driving range. The range is only 170 yards long and it is bring your own balls so it is good for the shorter irons. Membership is limited at 450 so it is never that busy.
It is in good condition at the moment and they have no tempory greens or tee boxes for the winter and hasn't been close due to rain ever.
€1439 is the membership. They have a deal where a member get 150 back if they reccomend you the guy who did it for us gave us 100 back which seems to be fairly common so 1339. U get 4 green fees and a night in the hotel as well there is 50 euro bar credit included in that.

Was a member in Corballis last year and it is a cracking little links course it is tough if you miss the fairway then u are reloading half the time, it is short and tight so u only need Driver on 4/5 holes, greens are great and course is always playable never closed for rain and being beside the sea frost isn't a big problem. Only down side is there is only a comp on Sunday and u have to go to the club the previous Sunday to sign in so its a bit of a pain.

Thanks for that Mike.. I take it there are comps there Saturday and Sunday?

Whats your taking on the course, difficult but fair etc, long? I must get up for a game i think so i can have a good look...

    Thanks for the reply

Not too hard of a driving course fairly open off the tee, Greens are great, they are big and if u dont hit the right section you will have a tricky 2 putt. It is fairly long to you have a good few longish par 4's. Comps Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday and there is also a open on Tuesday and a semi open once a month on a monday so loads of comps. Big plus is no Temp greens for the winter.

actually another Q. Do Roganstown enter the inter clubs? and if so across what categories?

Yes they do, although the club has only won one pennant to date. They are working to address this by focusing in on a slightly smaller number of key interclubs. There are also a good number of low handicap players, as well as players of all abilities.

My favourite thing about the course is its length and greens - great greenkeeper there.

Yeah, I understand what you mean, all those hills can be a bit of a pain. I think their membership fees are reasonable enough though. I can ask my dad how much they cost and I know some members pay their membership in installments.

Standing on the first i thought that it was gonna be a tough walk around but I was pleasantly surprised! The hills look tougher than they are.. although this could have been cause I played well, you know how it goes when your hitting it well ya could play 36 holes!

Played Sat and it is in great condition. The odd mud ball but very few they have lift clean and place but they could have had a counting comp. This year they are doing a deal if you pay your membership up front by the end of Jan you get membership to the Gym and Swimming pool for free. enjoy your round on friday. If you google roganstowngc you can see the clubs web site lots of info on there about fixtures and results and any news.

That sounds like a great deal! How is the club financially? Have they accounts posted up?

The owner gave a presentation at the AGM and was very positive by all accounts. The 2 course they own Roganstown and Swords Open are going well with membership holding steady in Roganstown. The hotel seems to be busy as well. The actual mens club have adecent bit of cash. i only joined this year and am fairly sure if you pay by CC you are covered if the club you join/buisness where you spend your money goes bust. They seem to be going well anyhow and the place is still well maintained.
