    Hey,

Asked this question in arrange a game thread but wanted to make sure it got viewed. Am up in in-laws in Longford for weekend and looking to get out somewhere Saturday.

If weather up there is anything like down here I'll be lucky to find a playable course so wondering what the best course in the vicinity is drainage wise and is most likely to be conducive to a decent round

    thanks

Only course in the Midlands i haven't played is Longford, out of the rest drainage wise after rain i would say Esker Hills is the best. Tullamore can take rain well to, Glasson & Athlone can be soggy but being so close to Lough Ree doesn't help them. Moate is boggy to due to it being on bog land, but a cracking little track. Played New Forest when it wasn't open to long in the wet, didn't hold up well. I'm sure its improved since.

Thanks for that. Open on in Esker on the Saturday but unfortunately its a team event. Unlikely to be lucky enough to find a team down a player :D

I know the timesheet in Glasson used to be quiet 11-12 o clock wise on a Saturday, may have changed.

Supposed to be nice but don't think I'd pony up that much to play on my own. I'll see if I can rope someone else in. Thanks

It was immaculate in September when we played, greens were excellent.

glasson very very wet at the moment i'm afraid to sau

Athlone holding up well at the moment though. Just a couple of small patches on 3rd and 4th but the rest is grand :)

we're getting some nice overflow from ballinasloe, glasson and roscommon golfers at the moment as all 3 of their courses are soaked!

But you would say that being a member there(joking). Think the first in Athlone is a superb golf hole.

I know you are looking locally, but Strandhill is an hour away and dry ATM. Playing winter rules though, lift and place in yhe semi. €20 too. Played on Sunday and wore the same pants to work Monday.

Don't touch Glasson, pity about Esker, after that your best bet is New Forest, I played it about a month ago after heavy rain and it was perfect, a few muckballs and not much travel but no puddles or muck tracks.
I'd also consider Mount Temple, in excellent condition a few weeks back, only softness was on the greens.

Tullamore holds up very well but unfortunately they go to temporary greens very quickly. You could check with them and it would be worth a go.

Mount Temple has good drainage usually quite dry even this time of the year

+1 on Esker Hills, played there at the start of the year, courses all around were drenched and Esker was in great condition.

Hate the 1st in Athlone! (might be due to the fact the only time I played it went out of bounds right off the tee! :D). A it has a nice look to it alright, if you can play the bloddy thing!:)

Thanks for all the replies guys

Lot of love for Esker...don't suppose anyone interested in playing it tomorrow given that I'm still looking for a wingman ? :D

If I was around the midlands tomorrow I would hop at the opportunity but unfortunately I'm heading south for the weekend.

Hope you get to play it. Love the course.

If Esker is not an option I'd recommend New Forest. Hell of a golf course. Not everyones cup of tea but I could never fault. One of those courses that you want to play again even if you have a terrible round. Takes the weather pretty well too from what I recall.

    Not a member btw.

Another vote to stay away from Glasson or Moate even though i love playing there.
I haven't hit a golf ball in weeks so can't comment on Athlone at the moment but it should be dry.

Love Esker Hills too and its always dry. Sun is shining in Tullamore today as well.

Pity I'm not around tomorrow or i would have treated you to a round in Athlone.

Carlow drains very well and is probably the best course in the Midlands imho. Temporary greens may be employed at this time of year however...

would carlow not be south east rather than midlands ? ;)

I mean, its almost 2 hours from Athlone and Athlone is right in the middle of the midlands. Dublin ( East ) and Galway ( west ) are closer! ;)

Probably a fair point! No doubt I was influenced by the naming of Carlow's premium open event, The Midlands Scratch Cup :)
