Can anyone recommend a gamepad for playing Mame, 8-bit and 16-bit emulators on the PC? I tried using my xbox gamepad on a couple of games but the analog stick felt all wrong and the d-pad wasn't great either.

The best controller you could get would be a 360 fightstick.

There are Snes usb pads that have been mentioned here recently, they'd be great.
For arcade stuff it all depends on how much you want to pay, but, if you bought a good Snes arcade stick and a usb adaptor you'd be set for Mame and Nintendo.

It will ultimately come down to what you want.
So you want your console emulators to feel authentic?
Then get the appropriate adaptors and the read controllers.

If you want Mame games to feel like arcade titles proper, then get one of many arcade sticks on the market, like the X-Arcade series, or build your own, plenty of tutorials out there.

This could be your perfect solution, it's a device that comes with all the necessary adaptors, you just provide the controllers, it even comes with custom software to help set it up.
Actually, you build it yourself but the creator does have some premade units, so email him and ask!

Or just get a fightstick and maybe mod is with seimetsu and sanwa parts. You won't get a better stick anywhere else.

I wouldn't bother with third party controllers that resemble the old controllers, they are usually made of poor quality parts. If you want an authentic controller get a converter.

I'd just go with the stick. Far better than a X-Arcade.

I don't know how much I'd enjoy playing 8-bit games with a fight stick, regardless of the quality of the parts. Mega man and mario would feel awful!

Get yourself a load of USB Controller adapters for the systems you really want to play & get yourself a controller from that system - http://www.retrousb.com/index.php?cPath=21

You can then reused controllers for many other systems, even MAME to the dismay of many folks on here :D

    Trust me, they really don't.

I have two Saturn USB gamepads for PC that work perfectly and have an awesome d-pad .
They are hard to find now but I see Sega Play controllers appearing on Ebay and they appear to be official Sega ones .

Thanks for the replys.....Hmmmm that fightstick looks really nice, it's been an age since I used a proper stick to play a game but you'd imagine they'd be perfectly suited to retro gaming since all arcade machines from the 80s and 90s used one. The sega PC controller looks good too, especially if it's an official sega product....decisions decisions!

If it's designed the same way as a saturn pad then the Sega one would be a good choice. The saturn has far and away the best joypad of any console.

Never used a saturn one but it looks pretty nice, Sega always made good hardware. Looks like these are official Sega gear too, they had some kind of subscription based site where you got a free gamepad when you signed up for 3 months. The site seems to be defunct now though.

    There's a Saturn-to-USB converter by Mayflash on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sega-Saturn-Controller-Adapter-USB/dp/B0089O10BC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1354826611&sr=8-2
This will work with genuine Sega Saturn pads.
The one messinkiapina linked is junk (sorry!).

Also consider Mad Catz arcade sticks (with, as Retro mentioned, a Seimitsu stick - LS-40-01, LS-58-01 or LS-32-01).

Third option is Nintendo Classic controller with a Wii Classic-to-USB adapter.

Final option is either PS1 pad with a USB adapter, or a plugged-in Sixaxis/DualShock3.

The cheap PlaySega USB official pad is awesome and exactly like the original Sega Saturn pad according to all reviews !

Well, guess Mr. 17days was on to something. After just two weeks of owning them, and not even a day's worth of playing with them, one of my PLAYSega pads has begun crapping out on me. The down direction on the d-pad has lost its spring and does not respond. Pathetic. Unless I open it up and see what I can do, I'm guessing this pad's a goner. Lucky I haven't even played with the other one yet.

After reading a bit more on the PlaySega pads it seems they get some mixed reviews. Some good reviews, some poor. There is some info on them here and people tend to compare then unfavourably with the original Saturn pads and the Sega Saturn USB pads from a few years back.

Apparently they're cheaply made Chinese pads branded by sega. They have them on play-asia very cheap. Might still be worth a shot for that money.

People said in reviews that the madcatz fightpad was better than the saturn pad. Utter lies, it's absolute junk. I think people that have never experienced the glory of the saturn pad need to shut up and stop pretending to be knowledgeable because I hear this all the time about junk products.
