Things to do when there's a powercut

We'd a longish powercut last night of about three hours in duration. We live in the country and our house is quite old so it really was pitch black and a little bit scary as I can be a bit of a wuss in the dark. :o We ended up having a great time anyway, some great hummena hummena and a few games of backgammon. Anyone got any other ideas for activites when there's a power outage? What do you normally get up to?

The last one we got I went for a drive to see how large the power outage was, so that's something to do if you have a car.

Buy a generator and learn how to connect to the main board without electrocuting the ESB man working on down the line.

Or not, depending on how much of a bastard you are. . . .

Wind up your wind up torch radio and tune to Lyric, then read a book.

Or if your wind-up radio has no torch, light some candles.

If you have no candles, burn a family member.

Call the ESB, or if it is daytime, light the fire and get the gas barbie out.

Revert to a feral state and start hunting animals around my premises, hissing at any passer-bys with a few branches tied together for a makeshift underpants.

A typical weekend for me, really.

Quickly utilize the darkness by moving your dead mother in law from the fridge to under the garden patio.

    Panic?

Electricity was off for a few hrs recently. We played hide and seek. I'd always listen out for the footsteps and, just before they would open the door where I was hiding, I would jump out first and frighten the bejaysus out of the seeker.

Great craic, must trip the fuses later ;)

My dad likes to fire up the generator and put as many lights on as possible, just to show off to the neighbours.

Take turns putting make up on each other - like the girl in the lotto ad, who's dad is putting makeup on her, for her wedding day.

Score each other points when the electricity comes back on.

Drive your car up to the front of the house and leave the lights on.. then sit and stare at the car until the power comes back.

Used to love all the power cuts back in the 70s & 80s during the glory days of industrial action, strikes and go slows at the ESB. Didn't know what was the best....the sossies (fried on the small camping stove that the mammy kept in the garage for just such emergencies) rolled in Brennans batch bread for tea. Or having the perfect excuse the next day at school for not having done my homework. :D

Missing Top of The Pops & going to bed in a Baltic bedroom were a balls though ! :(

Last time we had a power outage I didn't even notice for like a half an hour cause I was watching a movie on netflix, I then continued to watch said movie.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,435 ✭✭✭areyawell

watch a dvd on the laptop, go on facebook on the mobile or watch random ****e on youtube, take the car out for a spin, go to the casino, go out for a meal, go to the cinema, go to the pub for a few pints
Buy or borrow generator if its going to be out for a few days.
Just because the power goes does that mean you have to stay in the house!
