How do you pronounce Squirrel?

There seem to be a vast multitude of dialects for the pronunciation of "squirrel".
I grew up pronouncing it Squ-IH-rrel", two syllables "squi-rell", with the "squi" part rhyming with squid.
But I've heard other pronunciations ranging from "squrl" (rhymes with "world" or "furl", to the bizarre "squorrel", rhymes with "quarrel", "gnarl", or sometimes "Squarl" as in "Carl".

Is this a European vs American thing, or have I simply been wrong this whole time?

This is the second thread tonight in which the differences in pronunciation of the word 'squirrel' have been highlighted. I never realised how hot a topic it was before!

Squereill how else is it pronounced as in a squer (sounds like a squashed square or reverse pural of queer (s appears before the word)) that is actual ill, that's a squerill

Well it make sense to me ;)

Edit phonically it sounds that way, but it really dosen't help with the spelling at all

Sorry phonically I was wrong it wasn't ill, it's a minor and has a drill, or a half ill drill, which is a rill. It's still a squashed square though for the first part. ;)

In 2 seconds "headline of the day" lat (or toda) new her pres now (say it really quickly, you come up with some very interesting headlines) the news vendor always made me stop and buy one (it was a huge skill they had) It was half way between did I hear him right and it I did Wow (if I didn't what the hell am I'm missing) (human marketing at it's best. :D)

    Who cares about Ahmurrikans.

Just to be clear are we talking about the grey Ahmurrikan infiltrator introduced here by some tosser in Longford in 1906 or the native Irish (red) squirrel?

The first is pronounced "YOU MURDERING **** GET THE **** OUTTA HERE. GET THE **** BACK TO YOUR 'USA, USA, USA'"

The second is pronounced "Ah, you're a pretty little guy, gentle and red. Ahhhh."

Just drop the "q", it means your now next. (Some gob****e said their was a Silent "q" in squerrill, "q" is a very quiet sound but it is very much there in squerrill, as in square and in queer, it's sound isn't as clipped as a "c" or "k", so it's a sweeter sounding "caaa" almost like a "co" sound but with a softer sound a cross between "co" and "ku" therefore "q" always has a "u" after it, it helps in how it's pronounced. :D

Edit by the way I'm dyselicix, and was thought phonically, I love the sounds and images of languages (I see pictures when people speak) but in fairness I would be the last person I would ask in now to pronounce anything. I thought the above was quite good though, although it's actually BS. I have a problem with does and dose, one is belonging to a group of people (or a group of female deers (image)), the other is a mispelling, it took me till I was 30 to realise that image. So really I'm not the best to quote in spelling :D

dad says it like this, didnt know if it was just a him thing or a tipp thing.

it is amusing when he is discussing the routine holiday visits back home;telling people he is going to ireland on the turd, they must be thinking he is either batsht crazy or its a rather novel form of transport.

Oh I pronounce the 3rd as a turd, when I worked in London as a waiter, they thought it was so entertaining, the kept asking me to pronounce it, (the bloody restuarant was run by Irish guys)

I have a very neutral accent in general, except now when I say Dirty tree and a turd.

They where mean, but I needed my tips. :(
