Titanic II to be launched in 2016

Billionaire Clive Palmer has outlined his plans to launch a replica of the Titanic, due to launch from Southampton in 2016.

    Linky:

    http://www.digitalspy.ie/odd/news/a461845/titanic-ii-confirmed-for-2016-passengers-to-wear-1920s-costumes.html
"The area [for] passengers will be authentic with the same design and facilities," he said. "But there will be modern things such as air conditioning and other features we are debating - such as internet on the ship.

"There won't be TVs in the state rooms, though."

Palmer added that those in first class will be banned from anyone in second or third class. Costumes inspired by the 1920s will also be provided.

He stated: "It will really help you pretend you are in the movie."

The Titanic II will carry 2,600 passengers and employ 900 crew members. There will also be enough lifeboats for everyone.

I'm not sure of this is in incredibly bad taste, or a stroke of genius.

Would you pay to take the same voyage on a ship of the same name as those doomed passengers took all those years ago?

I'm a little bit ashamed to say I probably would, just for the experience of doing it :o

Just a little annoyance of mine... Northern Ireland and Belfast celebrate the Titanic as something marvellous and worthy of praise. The expo's and all that which they use as tourist bait as if it were such a success.

    The damn thing sank.

    On its maiden voyage!!!

"It will really help you pretend you are in the movie."

Or, you know, the real historical event that actually happened.

Was I the only one, when reading the title of the thread, thought it was going to be a film version?

    From an RTE article:
''It is going to be designed so it won't sink," mining and tourism tycoon Clive Palmer told reporters

Where have I heard that before.

I told him about this idea in confidence. Thought I could confide in him.

    Billionaire prick.

    +1

It was a marvel of the age and Belfast should rightly celebrate it. The electrical systems onboard alone were well ahead of their time. But the greedy owners and some truly bad luck put it on the course to oblivion: using lower grade metal, foregoing full bulkheads, insisting on speed, not enough lifeboats, the list goes on.

I won't be going in third class .

Titanic would be perfect for some time travel movie, with all those strange events/sequences which could have prevented the disaster:

Having no access to binoculars to see the iceberg

The extremely mild weather, pushing the iceberg further south and the dead calm (they couldn't see waves lapping off it)

Ignoring the ice warnings and telling the operator of the nearby ship to literally fcuk off to bed.

The change of course and speed, bringing it straight into the iceberg's path.

The cheap grade metal rivets which caused the metal plates to unravel on impact.

Slowing down the ship while turning away from the iceberg, instead on speeding up to turn faster.

Any one thing done differently could have changed everything utterly.

I'd say some boardsies would have a collection to send me on it if it was guaranteed to sink!

Sadly, I'd actually probably pay good money to see that.

So you get to costumes from a period 8 years after the Titanic sunk

To put it in perspective the costa Concordia is way bigger than the titanic, if the titanic was in southampton today it would be dwarfed by modern vessels and look quite unimpressive.

I doubt people would be arsed going on a small cruise ship with no swimming pools, running tracks, cinemas, kids play zones available on any modern large ship.

Hope they don't cast Leonardo DiCaprio again. He'd be too old this time round, imo.

Billy Zane could do with some work.

Used have an interest in the Titanic well before the movie came out.
Cameron's movie finished it, even the Cobh 100th commemoration fell for it, Celine Dion on a PA system screeching out over Cork Harbour. Sheesh.

Think this replica idea at best is cloying and kitsch and at worst, just plain ghoulish.

Having been out see for over 20 years, last 8 as captain, the superstition that comes with it says that you should never ever sail on a vessel with the same name if it has sunk.
It's bad luck,so good luck to everyone who wants to go on board.

but then what do you do if some guy names his boat "fred" (terrible example but my mind stalled) and it sinks....and then you on the other side of the world name your boat "fred"...

is it still bad luck if you don't know another boat called fred sunk?

If captain and crew went down with it yes.
If you read about Berge Istra and berge vanga, you will know what I mean:D

But the craic is mighty down in steerage.
plus if the rats start running, those in steerage will have a quicker warning that thur be a sinkin going on.

if there is internet onboard they will need this installing for realisms sake-

'Luck' is a load of old cobblers, meeting a red haired woman/saying certain words on board/changing a ship's name. Heard of one guy who thought it bad luck to bring a banana on board...what's a banana boat skipper supposed to do??!!

Er no thanks, nothing to do with superstition rather being I'd prefer not to be in the company of strange people who like dressing up as victims of a tragedy (when it's not Halloween).

Titanic II should be a luxury submarine.
