Emobile is better than tesco at only €32. unlimited texts, calls and 15gbs

Are those minutes and texts "in network" or "any network"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭PopTarts

I don't use my phone for calls too often so 3 will always be the best for me.

€20 - Unlimited Texts / Unlimited Data / Free Calls at the weekend / Free 3 to 3 calls every day + €20 to use for whatever you want (This is where I would use it for calls - 35c pm so works out just under 60mins call time)

Tesco minutes and texts are any network.

Not sure about em-mobile offer quoted above, but for me the advantage of the Tesco offer is that it is a rolling monthly contract.

My understanding (based on the paperwork with my TescoMobile SIM) is any Irish mobile or landline...

Based on their advertised rates, they're also competitive on international calls, although it's not something I use personally.

    Regards,
    Eddie

Jesus Christ ... how come mobile rates in Ireland are so cheap ..... getting raped here in the Netherlands and Germany by T-Mobile, Vodafone, KPN, O2 etc :(:(:(:(

I opened this thread looking for some fancy new Simonly phone, never heard of the brand but figured as I was already on the €35 package it'd be worth it :o

For what it's worth, I've been on Tesco Mobile for over a year now, their €35 package is fantastic, my only issue is that 1890 numbers you have to pay, I tend to just get whatever the local number is and ring that.

For those wondering about their coverage, they are a resale of the o2 network, so if you get o2 coverage you have Tesco coverage. The wife and I are both on the €35 package, we get the clubcard points back and claim back money back on the Electricity bill.

They've only started offering some decent deals recently, I think 3 were the first company to start offering decent deals (O2, Vodafone still offer rubbish deals imo).
Though if you think Irish deals are cheap, you want to see UK pricing!!

Very annoying but is there any plan with any network this isn't the case for? Genuinely interested.

What data speeds are you getting? I think their data speeds are throttled

There are no Irish plans that include 1890/1850/0818 as part of the minutes. They are all special geographical number and are call saving.

Just as an aside, if you make international calls and are on Three, check out http://gocall.ie. It gives you a premium rate (15XX) number that you can dial to get the cheapest international rates.

As for the data speeds with Tesco, they are capped at 2 Mbps download. This was bumped up last year, but I don't see it getting any higher.

    HTH.

Looks like the emobile one is like for like and better. 30 day rolling contract and would have the same network (and data speeds?) as Meteor
    http://www.emobile.ie/phonesplansmore/plans/postpay/detailsCallTextBrowse/?gid=48#

Unlimited calls and texts to any network anytime, unlimited calls to all landlines plus 15GB of data.

What kind of rates are you facing? Even tescomobile out of free credit rates are great like international landline calls to most countries including the UK are just 1c/minute.

I've been on this for the past while as well and it's perfect for me. 15gb of data and practically unlimited calls to mobiles and landlines. Plus their super cheap international rates.
    And no contract.
Using with a HTC one S that I got recently for 160 euro (another bargain alert thread) so very happy.

And tesco's network is far superior to that emobile crap. E mobile's coverage down the country is terrible. And their CC is the worst I've ever experienced. Complete nightmare.

For the 'lo-call' services etc just use saynoto1890.com and it finds a landline number that is free to ring, as in your landline minutes.

Yes, you can tether on Tesco from your allowances

Jesus that tesco deal seems good.
I have about 3 months left on my Vodafone contract so will definitely look at this.
I'm never ever doing a 24 month contract again.

and afaik you can use the double online top up offer to buy bundles
so top up by 20=get unlimited bundle + 11eur spare

I still reckon that Tesco works out better overall with the out of bundle charges being much cheaper like 2c/Mb data compared to 9c for Lyca and 1c/minute UK landline calls compared to 5c for Lyca. I suppose it comes down to each individual examining their own usage and making a call on where the balance lays.

Tesco all the way - very rarely have to call CC as everything runs like a dream. As for Emobile, was with them, possibly worst customer service ever experienced.

However, if you're on a PAYG mobile with no plan/bundle of calls then using the 1890 number saves you money compared to the landline number!

Jesus Christ ... how come mobile rates in Ireland are so cheap ..... getting raped here in the Netherlands and Germany by T-Mobile, Vodafone, KPN, O2 etc :(:(:(:(

Competition ! The Irish mobile sector's actually pretty seriously competitive and ComReg got the switching policies right. It takes about 3 to 15 mins to switch networks in Ireland, vs quite cumbersome processes in other countries that tend to take up to a week in some cases.

If we could get the landline sector into the same kind of mode, especially for broadband it would be great.

Ireland's definitely ahead on mobile data too compared to quite a few places I've lived. The mobile networks here seem to offer cheaper, faster data with much bigger allowances and far fewer restrictions.

These were the cheapest prepay I could find in Belgium, and they've just recently come to the netherlands too : https://mobilevikings.com/nld/en/

Check out the dutch MVNOs too : http://www.prepaidmvno.com/mvno-companies/eu-mvno-companies/nl-mvno-companies/ You might find far better offers than the main networks.

The links on that page don't work but just google the names one by one until you find a decent operator!

Still expensive, but maybe better than some of the others in NL.

    ----

I'm on the Tesco SIM-only €35 for a few months and it's a great setup.
The data's capped at 2mbit/s at the moment, but it's definitely reliably 2mbit/s and seems fine for spotify and youtube etc.

    Other big positives:

    1) Very cheap international calls (1 or 2 cent per min to most places (landlines and landlines/mobiles in the US/Canada as they don't distinguish).

    2) Visual voicemail using Hullomail's totally free.

Yes, if purchasing online you can either

    1. Purchase the Pay Monthly plan first and then port after or
    2. Get a PAYG SIM and port onto that and then purchase the Pay Monthly plan as an existing customer

48 Months has unlimited mobile and text for €20, just 50 mins landlines and 3Gb data though: http://www.48months.ie/membership/the-don

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,444 ✭✭✭StaticNoise

Mobile Data with 48 is capped at 1Mbps. Lets not forget this.
It is a great offer, but if you are a speed freak, or in any way a serious smartphone user, this will be a pain in the backside.

Looking into getting a good deal for my mam, so to compare:

    €35 - Tesco - Ultd calls/texts 15gb data (2mbps cap), cheap out of package calls - o2 coverage
€32 - Emobile - Ultd calls/texts 15gb data (unknown cap, if any), meteor coverage (bad?) and bad customer service
€29 -(or €20 online with €11 spare for out of bundle calls?) - Lyca - Ultd calls/texts/data (unknown cap, if any) - o2 coverage? Don't know of customer service or anything else about company. Are they reliable will they be long lasting, trustworthy, reliable?
    €20 - 48 - Ultd mobile calls/texts - 50 landline minutes, 3gb data (1mbps cap) - o2 coverage

Does anyone know, if you signed up to one of the deals on the o2 network, would others who have "free o2 texts" still be able to text for free or would it be seen as different if not actually with o2?

What would be the easiest for a non technical mammy to sign up for, no surprises, no issues, you just pay and you're away (for example, having to top up online with lyca could be an issue).

Also, are there any similar usage deals but entering a contract that will get you a free android smart phone?

Meteor coverage isn't bad anywhere I've been which is normally Dublin but don't remember it being bad anywhere. Data speeds are great. Gettting 6Mps up, 1Mps on HSPRA+

The beauty of all the above contract free plans is that you aren't stuck with the network for very long. If they are rubbish you can be done with them in a couple of hours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,848 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Are they not all 30 day contracts? Still very short of course, but not a few hours? :)

Would be nice to get the same kind of deal PLUS a free phone if any of the networks wanted you for 12/18/24 months and were reliable enough to go with?

You end up paying a minimum of 1 month but you can be ported in hours if you really had to

So Lyca seems the best price wise, just something tells me not to go with them for some reason?

Is your mam a big phone user? If not then the Tesco PAYG €25 offer might be worth considering with the option of moving to a contract after that offer is up. Worth trying out that one first before diving into a contract straight away. There is free unlimited texts with that offer as well.

Yeah she'd be a heavy enough caller and texter alright so I think something where she knew spending x amount would give her unltd use would be pretty good for her, it'd keep the landline bill down too probably. Problem is, she needs a new phone and I was hoping there'd be a contract she could get into where she'd be spending the money anyway, but would get a free phone by just agreeing to spend it with the same company for 12/18 months :)

In that case a contract would be appropriate. But why is she retaining the landline if she had a mobile on contract? Eliminating the line rental costs on that alone would go a long way towards the monthly mobile contract costs.

I was with 3 before going over to Tesco. Coverage is absolutely fine, they also have the NBS contract so they have extra cover in rural areas, and they never seemed to suffer from the occasional outages that afflict o2 and vodafone. Customer Service is a bummer though.

But don't let that turn you off. Yes the customer care isn't as lovely and simple as others, but it works. If you've issues, you've got the stores, but you can also get things done with the customer care team. I think persistence and knowing that you are dealing with a call centre is key.

Just set aside the foreign call centre and get on with it. Even O2 is moving there, gradually. They've already started .

I'm currently on the €20 with Three - the data is what really does it for me. I'm a big user of Gmail and Spotify.

Would the Tesco speeds be comparable to what I have, considering I'm mostly in Dublin city centre? Deal seems great, but it'd take good Internet connection to seal it for me.
