Hope this is the correct forum. Does anyone know anymore about this and when it is likely to happen?

    Thanks
Environment Minister Phil Hogan is getting rid of the rule which allows for exemptions from motor tax for cars that are "off the road".

The Government hopes the move will yield €40m a year, and the legislation bringing in the change is due to come before the Dail soon.

The article is about the van with no tax, the other bit at the end has been talked about for years.

Besides, it looks unreal to force people to pay tax on cars which are off the road.
But as they say - everything is possible.

I suppose there will be exemptions for Motor traders?

Interesting. So they may send you a bill for a car that you no longer own, i.e. that you sold to a person living abroad.

the idea is to declare the car off the road before hand.
meaning if you are driving and caught without tax after you have declared it off the road you are stung, and they will crush your car and charge you postage to have it returned.

I can understand if they bring in a SORN like the UK and sting you if you are caught out, but where does the 40m revenue come from?

supposedly lost revenue from people declaring off the road instead of paying arrears

People doing the tax for 3 months. Drive for 2 months more then declare it off the road for the 2 months. And get 3 months tax. Repeat

Sounds too exhausting! whyndo it, surely paying the 3 month option, the fee works out higher in the long run or probably somewhere around the annual figure anyway.

I thought it was illegal to drive without a valid tax disc, surely the guard would'nt keep signing the form off.

I'd be delighted to see all those tax dodging scumbags have their cars crushed. They should set up seating so we can watch, or have a parade of steaming metal cubes.

they are merely witnessing the signature...if you are telling porkies it can come back and bite you

They are only taxing the car for 6 months of the year.

If you pay 1/4ly it is more expensive than paying annually. But the fine for not paying is less than the tax. So tax for 3 months, drive for 2 then back tax and new 3 months is cheaper than keeping it taxed

All the Garda is doing is witnessing your signature. You are the person making a legal declaration that the car has been off the road.

What they should be doing is witness the signature, check if the car has flagged on Pulse/ANPR and then do the person for both offences if it has:D

Well if they did it, I would assume there would be a process to register the car as exported.

So far as covering tax dodgers, Ok, get them and make them pay their dues....Where I'm not happy would be the Govt charging 'motor / road tax' to people for having 'spare' vehicles...I have a project car for summer use, a van for winter and spring and a general back up for all the family...I dont break the law, I do pay my tax, and I live deep in the heart of the country where there is no piublic transport....Very obviously, this is another FG money robbing ploy to drop on the already cash strapped car dependant populous....How much before there is a proper rebellion in respect of 'milking the motorist'...

There won't be any. We will sit, relax and just pay as always :).

As far as I know the only difference would be is that you have to make the declaration up front similar to the SORN Declaration in the UK.

    Hi Keith....

Yeah, look, im fine with declaring VOR on anything thats not being used as the cars and van are used on a rotation basis, Im concerned that we (the motorists) will be called upon to pay 'road tax' simply for owning a car, irrespective of whether its insured and NCT'd for use on the public roads or not...And that was how I was reading the bill, as it where, just another revenue stream for the ECB paymasters bail-out...(the Govt would of course deny till bule in the face)...

Thank you for the responses, I think I feel a little bit less worried now. We had to take our family car off the road (2.9 people carrier) as road tax too much for us at the moment; stored in a friends warehouse and short of a miracle just now it will have to stay off the road as no buyers either!

When you sell a car you have to send change of ownership details from back of log book back to Shannon. If you don't, you are still legal owner and any convictions are yours.

By any chance is it a SsangYong Rodius?

When you sell a car to a foreign buyer that lives abroad you have to hand over the Vehicle Registration Document to the buyer. And that was my point in the first place.
