So, when I tell people this, it provokes laughter, jokes and so on... 'no big deal then', most would say. And I'm sure many have seen this thread title and thought 'meh'.

The thing is, it's alot more than a fear. And I genuinely need to do something about it. I literally know nothing about how this works... is there someone I could go and see?

It's not even that I fear that one will jump on me - If I see one on TV/the web, it will give me an electric shock like feeling throughout my body. It will put me off for a few hours and I won't be able to think about anything else. If I think a rat/mouse is about to come on the TV(i.e. when a dark urban alleyway comes on), I'll look away. I'll genuinely become fearful.

I know this isn't the most common 'phobia', and many people have a minor fear of vermin. But I take it to a whole new level. And the big problem is, my dream is to live in New York.

I need to go there in November(it will be my first time) and if I am to use the subway I will more than likely encounter some. I would literally run away, feeling sick. I would probably faint if I ended up in a carriage with one, and that does happen. I can honestly imagine being afraid to go outside with fear of seeing one.

I know it's really pathetic and embarrassing, but it's my reality.

Is there anything I can do?

You're probably heading to the best place to get over this phobia.
    Have fun:

You should find someone with rats as pets, and visit them.

They are surprisingly engaging, intelligent animals. Like smaller, smarter dogs.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help with this...

If you want physical help rather than empathy, you might find something of use in the HELPFUL LINKS section.

I'm dissapointed in myself for not realising that link myself! Cheers mate, I actually do need help. I've been trawling the web for years to engage with the empathetic but it's unproductive!
