The 77th La Flèche Wallonne, Wednesday 17th April, Binche - Huy (205 km)

It's time for the second of the Ardennes Classics! Official website here. This race revolves around the vicious Mur de Huy climb, which is 1.3km long, with an average gradient of 9.3%, and has a maximum gradient of 26% The race reaches Huy after 107km, after which the riders will have to tackle the Mur three times in between some other climbs. The last breakaway winner of this race was a decade ago, so it's safe enough to say that this race will come down to the final ascent of the Mur. It'll be a crazy bunch sprint :D

Full start list here. This is the type of finish that Joaquim Rodriguez gets out of bed in the morning for. He's the best in the world at super steep, short climbs. The 2012 Flèche winner crashed out of the Amstel race last Sunday, leaving him with a leg muscle injury. Will this be enough to stop him competing for the win today? I don't think so.
Philippe Gilbert is really starting to come into form, as shown by his very strong attack on the Cauberg in the Amstel. Although he was caught on the flat after the summit, nobody could stay on his wheel during the climb. He won FW in 2011 and was 3rd last year. If he is at the front in the last few hundred metres, it's hard to see anyone overtaking him.
Alejandro Valverde was the rider who managed to catch Gilbert in the Amstel, and ended up finishing 2nd. He's a strong climber and like Gilbert, he's a good sprinter, so I wouldn't be surprised if he finished on the podium today, but I don't think he'll win.
Look out for the pure climbers like Sergio Henao, Nairo Quintana, and Igor Anton to attack on the steepest sections of the Mur, hoping that Gilbert and Valvderde will be too far back to compete in the final 100 metres, which are 'flat-ish' at 6% gradient :p Henao had a fantastic win on a stage in the Tour of the Basque Country which featured a similar short, steep finish. He could be a real contender.
Peter Sagan is competing in his first Flèche today. Since he has never experienced the Mur de Huy before, and along with suffering from cramps in the final stages of the Amstel Gold Race, I can see him struggling to finish in the top 20. It's his last Spring classic this season though, so expect him to empty the tank today.
Dan Martin has a very realistic chance of competing for the win today. He finished 6th in this race last year, and won Volta Catalunya last month. He crashed in the Amstel, but no serious injuries were reported. He does have the ability to beat Purito, Gilbert etc. Nico Roche is on domestique duties today for Contador and Kreuziger (I don't think Contador will feature on the podium today, L-B-L will favour him more).

    PROFIL.png

    Outright betting: P Gilbert 11/4; J Rodriguez 4/1; S Henao 6/1; A Valverde 6/1; P Sagan 17/2, N Quintana 9/1; A Contador 14/1.

    D Martin 33/1.

Live TV coverage on Eurosport1 from 2pm. Highlights later today on Eurosport1 at 6.15pm and 11.45pm, and on Eurosport2 at 9.30pm.

Good man! Head for the bar at the bottom of the Muur, or carry on straight and go up to the park/beer tent at the top of the hill. Make sure you walk the Muur afterwards to get areal appreciation of what a breaker it is. Enjoy!!

Might go further up the hill this year, seeing as there's a beer tent up there.

As along as the TV feed is ok for the last 1.3km it will be ok...... but it will probably go títs up.

Saw him at the bottom, seemed to be about 4 or 5 rows back, probably not ideal.

    Did Dan get 3rd??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,526 ✭✭✭✭Darkglasses

Nope, he's been placed 4th. So close, Buffalo's right, bad positioning at the bottom probably why he's not on the podium.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,527 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Dan rode the last 200m way faster than anyone else. If he just had been closer to the front...... He was waaaaay back at the bottom of the climb :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,450 ✭✭✭Harrybelafonte

Bettancur deserved the third at least, though I did appreciate Martin staying "in the zone" til the end. Gutsy as usual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 254 ✭✭bwalsh1983

OMPQS might have had a bummer Boonen Spring but they have some rider in that Kwiatkowski feller.

Aye, but didn't he do the exact same last year? Really fast up the climb, but started from too far back. Dammit Dan, don't make the same mistake twice!

Ain't that the truth! He has had a marvellous season so far - surely he is the future of OPQS. The Tour of Poland has become a fine indicator of future form in recent years - Dan, Sagan, Moser, Kwiatkowski...

Oh dam! rat !....I thought Dan would win it......just too far back on the climb...his form i great though

Maybe Garmin need to strengthen their support riders to help position him at the start of a climb ???......as well as look at their tyres !!!

Happy to see its not the Sagan/Gilbert/Valverde show again....too predictable for me
Good to see Sagan is human.....BMC rode their heart out for Gilbert ...maybe its the curse of the rainbow jersey !!!

He's said that his only focus this year is le Tour and that he's not too bothered about any other race. It sounds like the sponsors want him in these races.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,606 ✭✭✭MPFG

From Twitter...quote from before the race even started

Contador on Flèche: "To prepare for the Tour it'd probably have been best to skip it. [But] Saxo Bank wanted me to be here". Can he win it?

Saxo had three leaders today ???? strange......why not leave Contador to his tour prep

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,147 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

Damn I thought Dan had nicked 3rd :(
Good win for the super domestique tho, nice to see 'one of them' getting something, he was probably a good e/w bet considering Purito's injury worry.

Moreno rode the Mur in 2'48" - only 5 winning times have been recorded quicker, and three of those are by CERA poster boy Rebellin. Sub 3 minutes seems to be the standard now and Moreno's time is almost a full minute quicker than Fignon's 1986 time.

He did but he couldn't really be dicing it on the front because Hesjedal still had a gap on the bunch at the bottom of the Mur. At the same time Rodriguez's finishing kick looked unbeatable last year. This year was more of a lost opportunity. Still a very good result though.

That's an unbelievable difference in time. 25% quicker than Fignon!

Dan is 16/1 for liege, which I think of this weeks races probably suits him best. Think I might stick a few bob on him.

Is there any legitimate reason that someone could be doing a 1k climb a full minute faster than one the most naturally gifted cyclists of all time? Was Fignon on a solo break and under no pressure or something?

Fignon won solo and whopped the likes of Kelly, Lemond, Rooks, and Criquelion by 3 minutes odd, and Hinault by 4' 30", and the race was 50k longer back then so its difficult to draw comparisons. It was actually his only significant win of that year. His attack is at about 30 seconds here http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7a3n4_laurent-fignon-la-legende-patie-2_sport#.UW8uUb8q-Jc

Nico came 37th yesterday, 43 seconds behind Moreno (Kreuziger was 17th and Contador was 33rd). That's not too bad of a result considering he was domestique-ing for the day. I think his best result was 30th in 2010?

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,270 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

It was a good result for Martin given that he punctured in the last 20km. Chasing back on can't have helped him finding a good position for the finale.

I liked this quote from Betancur:
Betancur said that the 2013 boom in Colombian cycling, rising from sixth to second overall in the nations classification in the UCI WorldTour ranking, was due to the "biological passport. [Anti-doping] controls are far tighter nowadays and riders like us who live at altitude have more of an advantage."

Nice to see guys speaking up.

An interesting comparison. There was a more thorough analysis of it on cyclingtip.com.au but it seems to have been removed (?). Some salient points would be that the footage is more or less synchronised to cover the last 600m of the climb, and that in the 1994 footage there is still a lap to go. The riders of the nineties could rider hard tempo up the climb three abreast as fast as today's riders can while sprinting for the win.

Great pics! You got a decent spot then - is that the raised banking just around the second bend? Hope you enjoyed it, heading on to Liege?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,559 ✭✭✭The tax man

Those pictures were taken on the lower slopes just before the tight left/right bends. After they went through we headed up further than last year and hung around the 250m board. Hill was jammed, compared to last year.
Spent last night in Liege and some of the Astana team were staying in the hotel. Sadly I'm back home now, would love to be still there till the weekend.

Really fantastic photos, they look as if they are from a pro.
Were you wearing a vintage Irish soccer jersey by any chance? I saw some photos on the web and was wondering if it was you.

Nice photos tax man. But you've probably managed to get Marcus Burghardt barredfrom Liege - Bastogne - Liege.

    @ Dastardly00 No I wasn't wearing a soccer jersey.

@Vlad I never saw that bottle coming towards me while I was taking the pictures. First I knew of it was when it hit the path and my foot.
He had no.27 on his bike, start list says that was Amael Moinard but I wouldn't know what either look like. In his defense there was a large steel bin next to me, maybe he tried to do the right thing.:p

Nothing like a bit of cropping to improve pictures.;)
