Probably opening a can of worms here, but saddles....

I'm certain it's subjective, and down to personal taste/shape, but I'm curious about replacing my saddle. I'm just starting out though, and I understand that at first there's going to be pain that just has to be worked through, still I feel a wider saddle could help me no end. After 10 minutes yesterday, I could hardly sit on the thing, and I'm far from comfortable/capable standing off the seat as I cycle.

Anyway, been looking at the saddles on Halfords, and I haven't a clue really, I tried searching for reviews without much, if any luck, the BikeHut, San Marco(most seem too slim though, maybe besides the Blaze) and Lookin saddles all look good. Not sure if one with suspension would help or hinder me either.

I looked up them gel covers you just pop over your saddle, but for everyone who says they're great, there's another that says they're no help at all. I assume they're probably good if you already have a suitable saddle?

    Any input?

Do you wear padded shorts whilst cycling?

Ism Adamo. I used to get pain until i got one of these. They are expensive if you are a Lidl kind of shopper, but worth every penny. 5 hour cycles with padding are no problem for me now.

Saddles are quiet a personal thing, what works for one person wont always work for another.

Not yet with the shorts, planning on getting them ASAP, hopefully tomorrow.

Try the shorts for a bit before you change saddle. I never cycle anywhere without padded shorts.

You have no idea how much an impact padded shorts/tights have..

Sounds like a plan really, certainly don't want to be rash with the saddle.

Not a clue, really. Before this week I didn't even know they came with padding, thought they were only for friction, or building up layers.

No shorts? Omg :( forget new saddle for now and get a pair of shorts and I'd have to say real shorts , by that I mean the lidl/aldi stuff has very thing padding so get something comfy. Comfy doesn't have to break the bank either:)
As for wider saddle , I don't know about a wide saddle on a long haul I have found in past I tend to slip off bigger saddles..

A lot of my reasoning behind the wider aspect of the saddle is due to the fact that I'm a big fellow, not just heavy, but naturally large and wide.

If you don't have shorts I presume you are not cycling long... A few months and your barse area will adapt, but it really is just about getting time in the saddle.

Days, but I had a bike a few years ago, and don't remember pain like this despite cycling much longer distances and routes, even off road.

EDIT: What I had was a mountain bike back then, this is a hybrid I have now.

I swear by the Charge "Spoon". Lovely saddle and cheap as chips!

    Indeed. Saddle rash. Not good...

Fizik 00 carbon is what I'm after next :)

@ OP, before you do anything about your saddle, get a pair of padded shorts/tights etc and go on another cycle or two..then report back

Which is why I'm half afraid to just go and buy a wide saddle, in case I go too wide.

    Shorts are first priority now.

I ended up getting both at once, as I don't get to go shopping all too often.

I did spin about a bit with the shorts before swapping saddles, the shorts were a revelation, but I still felt I needed a touch of support, so I swapped the new saddle in, and between them I feel 100% better whilst cycling.

Your saddle should feel pretty good without shorts IMO (and I don't mean naked). Using shorts to prolong the inevitable isn't the way to go. A new saddle should feel better within a few seconds of trying it. Which you just discovered. So why am I still typing, bored I suppose.

Hey now, lets not rule anything out, naked cycling could be fun!

I'm happy enough with the saddle now that I would indeed be quite happy to use it without the shorts. I can imagine situations where I'd want to cycle sans shorts, so it's a win-win for me.
