Is it possible to delay registration with the Teaching Council?

Okay, I know its absolutely required if you want to teach in Ireland.

I start the PDE in September and should be finished in May 2014. I'm told I need to do workshops and get 300 hours experience before the Teaching council recognizes me as a teacher.

I plan to leave Ireland ASAP and possibly stay away for ten years (I will work in either ESL or a non teaching capacity). Can I delay my registration until say 2024. Or is it absolutely necessary to complete it within 3 years of finishing the degree?

So is the 300 hours experience required post qualification or post registration application with the Teaching Council?

This is the part that confuses me.

Hi ByChance, it's post registration, as you must be registered now to teach. If people had to wait very few would be registered!

So I can finish the course, leave for ten years, come back and begin the registration process by applying?

As far as I know you should be able to do that? Your qualification would still stand. Unless they change the rules at some stage, which wouldn't be surprising. It would be worth contacting the TC to ask them about that, and to check what the situation would be with any teaching you did in that 10 years - I don't know if it could count towards the 300 hours if you are not already registered.

Whatever you do, please get them to give you your response in writing.
A friend of mine has a hard time with registering. Despite having the exact same experience etc. as me, my application was successful, hers was not...this is purely down to different TC employee's interpretation.
Insist on it in an email or a letter.
Always makes them think twice before fobbing you off with a quick answer.
