No offical national bird of Ireland?

Was curious earlier and decided to look up national birds from around the world, and to my shock, Ireland has neither an offical or unoffical bird. Symbols and flags hold no importance to me, but we look left out compared to others. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_birds
I understand that Ireland has no endemic birds, but we have endemic sub group such as dippers and blue tits. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_of_Ireland I think a Raven/jackjaw/magpie to tie in with the War Goddess Morrigan (Bhtuan has the Rook taken) or maybe the humble wren, held up to such importance by the druids. A chough or a lapwing too could be nice or we could go different and put a feral pigeon. Or even Dustin the Turkey. What do you suggest AH?

No offical national bird of Ireland?

Interesting question. The Fiach (Raven) due to its connection with Cú Chulainn? The Lon Dubh (Blackbird) due to its role in poetry as a symbol of nature's beauty? The Dreoilín (Wren) and its connection with pagan tradition?

Dosto-The Wren and Raven seem to make the most sense for mythology, plus Ravens are extremely clever. A shag, seabird would be amusing, any other suggestions? I hate not being able to thank/quote on my mobile.

The Pigeon, as that is what Anglo Irish Bank and their friends have made us all out to be.

What does an official bird do?

Is it not better that we aren't following the crowd and doing our own thing without having one?

Whats the harm in having one and being proud of our creatures?

    Charlie Bird of course.

I'll vote for the Crow. A little one fell down our chimney this morning at 6 am approx and outwitted the dimwitted cat for 4 hours.

He was then saved and they all lived happily ever after.

Well it seemed that they had made friends :D The cat was sitting on the couch and the crow was sitting on the ground to the side of the tv unit when he was rescued. There were no feathers or mess made!

He was seen at the window at 6am by a neighbour and we never realised he was there til nearly 10.30.

Going to buy a thingy to cover the chimney tomorrow to stop that happening again.
    Poor little thing :(

What was the bird on the old 50p coin?

    A woodcock.

Prior to the 50p it was used on the pre-decimal farthing.
