    Curious,

Is there any way I can do a search of more than one person at the same time when searching UK birth records, on sites like ancestry, or somewhere similar. I have a great uncle and I know three of his childrens names, but trying to find the other kids names and his wifes maiden name. Rather than doing multiple searches and trying to tick and check different lists, I would like to be able to enter more than one childs name to reduce my searching...

    Hope I'm making sense!

    Thanks in advance

    what timeframe ?

The England/Wales BMD Index, e.g. FreeBMD, includes mother's maiden name on birth entries, but only from about 1911 I think...

either way - I'd narrow down by timeline, and registration district - using census if poss.

    Hi Shane,

We're talking about the late 1930's to early 1950's. I know the FreeBMD includes the maiden name, I guess I'm just wondering if I could search to see if a list of children had the same mothers maiden name, even though I don't know what that maiden name is...

God, I'm not asking much am I....!!!!

    Thanks for the help!

    what's the surname ?

If it's a common one you could have a problem, unless you have middle names and dates for the children you know about, and/or a detailed location..

if you narrow down your search by area you might be able to come up with a few possible families, i.e. start the search with the names you know, and follow the combination of surnames from there. You dont need forenames in the search on FreeBmd, but it helps if you narrow by district, or at least county. You can select several neighbouring districts at once to search if required - there are lists of districts and their civil parishes here I think there's a map of reg. districts for England on FamilySearch, but dont have the link handy at the moment...

but you'll probably need at least one cert to get you started...

p.s. watch the dates on the districts, and even counties - some changed by the 30s to 50s

Surname is Higgins, and the only names I have for kids thus far is Patrick, Mary and Winnie/Winifred....We know he was around the Manchester area at that stage but can't be sure he married, or kids were born there.....sometime between 1930 to about 1955 I guess!

Winifred's the one to start with - least common name of the three...

there's a few different districts covering the greater Manchester area - besides the ones with Manchester in the name, def. would include Heywood.. dont know the others off hand

My thoughts too, I started search under Lancashire instead of Manchester, to cover a bigger area!

So narrow down your search from there, if you get multiple results for an area within Lancashire!

I know, my point was I need to click into each entry to identify the mothers maiden name...I was looking for a quicker way, not saying there is a quicker way, more hoping there was!

surprising number of potential matches in the county for that name ... but just 4 in Manchester itself, and one in nearby Salford. Think your going to need to try a few certs and see if gt-uncle shows up as father on one of them..

A few, based on limited geography knowledge of the area, are def. outside the immediate area of Manchester - e.g. Liverpool, so next step might be worth checking the other districts to see where they are located in relation to Manchester

Was using FreeBmd on Ancestry.com so have to hover over the name to see the maiden name....

I find FreeBMD much better for this type of search, although it can be slow at times...

You can narrow by a single or multiple districts, from a list

Thanks Shane, just using that now. I think I'll be exporting lists into excel and sorting by specific columns to narrow my options!
