4 wheel drive recommendations

Hi, just looking for some advice and recommendations please.

I currently have a 4WD 2002 Rav4 and I'm thinking of trading it in for something newer. I'd like to get another Rav4 ideally but they're just a bit too high in price for me, 2008 models are coming in at around €14k. I don't think I'll get much of a trade in on my 2002, it's very low spec, no A/C or any extras and the mileage is high enough.

So I'm thinking of branching out into other car makes and models to get something a bit better value. Was thinking of a 2008 model of whatever I get cos of the lower tax but I'd go as old as 2005 I suppose if I saw something I liked. I'd like another 4WD as I find them very handy if we get any kind of icy/snowy weather and I also have a long commute to and from work every day so something comfortable is essential as well. Due to the long commute a diesel is the only option really otherwise it wouldn't be worth my while working hardly with the fuel costs!

Can anyone recommend any 4WD cars that might fit the bill? I love SUV/jeep type cars but appreciate that they're at the dearer end of the price bracket so am willing to even go for a saloon, once it's 4WD (and not an estate, I've an irrational hatred of estates!! :)

    Thanks!

Subaru Forster. a 2005 one will come in way under $14K. There aren't all that many around but if you hold out a really good spec model comes along at a good price.

It's not an estate, it's an SUV.

Dacia dusters are 16k new according to their website. To be honest the 4 wheel drive thing to me is mental given the very few if any days, we have snow over the year. But you mention you also like SUV type vehicles, probably for seating position etc...

just checked things out! the "cheap" motor tax you refer to under the emissions system is E750 v E951 on the CC basis. Cheapest 08 I see is

So, €3000 difference in asking price, plus interest on the difference if you are borrowing, so only 15 years to claw back the "cheap tax" assuming you are not borrowing, in which case it will be up to 20 years, a long wait in my opinion... I wont go into opportunity cost either...

The problem is OP if you want something with low tax then you are going to pay above the odds for the privilege.

Skoda Yeti? I'm on-board with the Forester though. Thirsty yokes but that's what you get with permanent 4wd.
