I started working as self-employed at the end of April this year and I thought eventually I would appear on the renvenue's system and I would then be assessed for taxation purposes. Recently after talking to a friend they've told me that I may then get a large tax bill and what I should do is register as self-employed immediately. Can anyone advise me?

You need to register yourself with Revenue. If you have been earning a lot of money, I would advise getting an accountant to do your books for you.

Where did you get the idea that you would eventually show on Revenues system and then be assessed for tax purposes?
If you are "self" employed, you are "self" assessed for tax purposes. Basically its up to you to follow the rules and regulations for Self Employment.
You need to register as self employed and file Income tax returns. If you only started this year, then your return is not due until next year.
The link below will assist you further. You may also wish to speak to an accountant.

Failure to register and abide by the rules governing self assessment can have consequences.
