So you don't currently have any form of digital terrestrial receiver? Or maybe your tv doesn't work with Saorview? Or you want Freeview HD?

The Humax Fox T2 Freeview+HD PVRs are the best by a mile but not cheap unless you buy an old model and they are not one hundred percent compatible with Saorview.
There is no Saorview PVR that will display and record the Freeview HD channels yet.

There is a newer more advanced model on their website also but it is way overpriced.

    I have this model
This does not do Saorview subtitles or teletext
It can do UK DVB subtitles and digital text, MHEG-5

Also the Saorview channels are in the 800s range, no channels numbering adjustment
purely Uk spec only with no country setting for Ireland.

The Freeview HD Technika would not be a good idea for Saorview.

That Goodmans box is Freeview SD only, no Saorview & doesn't record, let alone series link.

How do you know if you even have a usable Freeview signal where you are?

For a proper PVR, in areas where Saorview & Freeview are available, you're best off going with a Freeview +HD box. The Humax HDR-FOXT2, already mentioned in this thread, is a popular & well respected example.

If you search this forum for model names/nos., you should find a bit of info. from owners, with more recent threads mentioning Saorview series link.

Was hoping for a cheaper model and know the humax is an excellent machine. Just require a sd box for a spare room attic room prop does not need pvr capabilities but if it did would be brill going on a standard old tv!
    Thanks

As mentioned already in this thread, the Humax HDR Fox T2 isn't fully compatible with Saorview, but is one of the best options currently available.

This model is now discontinued, but is very popular still, and so fetches premium prices. With the custom firmware onboard, it can be made do a lot more than the bog standard spec, including custom channel numbering.

I use both the HDR Fox T2 and the Fox T2, and get full HD services from Freeview & Saorview. The EPG loads separately for each platform, but series link has worked perfectly for me so far.

Keep an eye out for a Humax on Ebay, you never know your luck.

Any of the ~€50 Saorview boxes will work with Freeview SD. I think they can all record to USB device but, if you want to watch a different programme while recording, your choice will be limited to something carried on the same multiplex as what is being recorded. As an example, you won't be able to watch RTE2 while recording RTE1 & vice-versa. No series link either.
