Well, so following on from advice got on this I bought a trained red setter, a friend came with me about 2 months ago and now wants to get into the sport, now he has a golden retriever whos a 4 year old neutered dog, hes in good condition although a small bit overweight, Never ever shot over .But if he through out a dead rabbit in a ditch the dog would go get it but then go off and eat it, she is kind of trained sit, stop and comes back to name ,but as a year old he has rose pheasant. Is it to late to train him to be a pheasant dog and hopefully retrieve, not ideal I know but he hasnt the space for another dog, can it be done and how should he go about training at first, any books dvds etc etc thanks

This breed is little used now as a gundog. And if there is no hunting background in it he will find it hard to get it to work.

Mate I can raise a pheasant as can anyone if stumbled upon
It all about following the scent and picking up the area the bird is in. I've raised pheasants walking.
It's all about the scent hunt and flush.
IMO dog is gone passed it's days to be a hunting dog. A lot is in the bloodline.
Hard to accept but it's gone passed it's day. If the dog is given to a pro trainer and taught then all the best with it

I've a 6 month golden lab pup I'm just starting to bring on for training.field trailers in the blood.means feck all unless she gets the training needed.
Eating game? Think that labs time is up.
Just after retiring my sprocker because she's starting to eat game.at 7, I don't think I'd get it into her that she shouldn't be eating it.
    So here's hoping for amber!
Training her on Stan Harveys tactics
