CBT/cousilling for confidence

Ive suffered from low self esteem and confidence for years, ever since I was bullied as a child. Its cumulated in me being unable to start romantic relationships due to disbelief that anyone could ever love me and has impacted on forming friendships, as I find myself not wanting to make contact with friends or make plans in case they reject me. I want to sort myself out this year as it impacts on my college work (only ever give things 50% as I think im not good enough/as smart as the lads in my class)

I want to go to a coucillor for help in tackling this but as Im only a student I dont know if I could afford it. How much is it and how would I find a good coucillor? Is there good books that could help that would mean I wouldnt need the councilling sessions? Im so sick of my whole life being ruined by this, the rational part of me says I must be okay as my family and friends like me but this part never wins out when Im carrying out day to day interactions :(

Posters are not allowed to give you personal recommendations on counsellors, you should chose someone that you are happy with, not that someone else is happy with. There is good advice in this thread on how to go about finding a good counsellor.

If you are in college then there should be a counsellor there you can speak to.

I will allow the thread to remain open so that posters can offer you advice on how to deal with your problems. Posters are reminded that no medical advice is to be offered.

I had a look around a while back for books on overcoming low self esteem & the following seems to be highly regarded: http://www.overcoming.co.uk/single.htm?ipg=5229
I'm currently working through it & it seems to be good if self help is what you need. However I'd also suggest getting in touch with a counselor through your school, there should be one available & they'll be able to give you good advice even if they don't think you need counseling.

I always wanted to do CBT but was too scared but recently found this. I start on wednesday so ive no idea if its good or not. But sounds promising.

But if you're in college im sure students with anxiety is very common and they would have (i assume) free support for this via a counselor or doctor or something,
I wish i had taken the step in college and not now, as i was very socially avoidant and never talked to any classmates, or anyone in general the entire time(still am), so dont leave it too late like me !

best of luck, dont wait around, take action !
