...I am unsure what would be compatible on my PC.

I have a Packard Bell Cuba MS-7301 motherboard and the only thing that is sort of holding me back from playing a little more modern-ish games and other applications is my processor.

Currently, I have an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4300 @1.8GHz and I read somewhere that my motherboard isn't compatible with Quadcore processors. That doesn't bother me too much (if it's true), but anything that's better than the one I've got would do me fine.

Would anyone have any ideas on what I can do?

What graphics card do you have, and what games are you trying to play? If you can't take quads, the best you will get is likely an 8500/8600 but you won't find many of them floating around now.

I have an NVidia GeForce GTS 250.

Examples of games I've managed to play but not on max setting:

    Dragon Age 2
    World In Conflict
    Skyrim
    Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
    The Sims 3
    Sniper Elite V2

I would love to play Shogun 2 Total War but I would really prefer to have it on a high setting as I did with all the previous ones (which worked fine for me). But the requirements of that game are a tiny bit higher than what I have, but doesn't need a Quad-core to run it at full potential.

My monitor resolution is 1920x1080 max (3840x1080 if you count the fact I have 2 monitors, but I digress)

I'll decide my budget once I see what processor my board is capable of

As far as I can see it'll only run Core 2 Duo 4xxx, not even 6xxx so never ind the 8xxx!

The mobo can also only take 2gb Ram Max, so if anything id say thats a big part of the problem too.

So tbh OP, I wouldnt waste any money trying to upgrade something so dated.

It takes 3GB of RAM which is what I have installed. RAM isn't an issue for me. Any upgrade from 1.8GHz wouldn't bother me.

Here's a screenshot of my motherboard specs if any more info is needed.

And here is my CPU specs (processor, etc.)

There is little point, the difference between what you've got and a slightly faster one would be negligible. Sorry, but you need a new pc

In that case, are there any particular stores that would specialize in selling gaming PC's? I looked at Dell's Alienware range but then heard about how their prices are too high, so I didn't look into them that much.

I don't know the first thing about building a PC from scratch. At the stage I've ended up being at, I'd rather just get one already built

why would it only accept that line of cpus? i know it wouldn't take 1333mhz fsb cpu's but could he not use an e6700 or similar? they can be gotten for around 30 euro.

Do you have a budget? I'm sure there will be someone out there willing to build it for you for reasonably cheap.

That or you could buy one online already assembled, I'd avoid getting a PC from a shop.
