I'm thinking of buying one around 07 or 08. Anyone had one of these? Do they give much trouble? Good on diesel?, any tips would be great thanks.

Never owned one but I've driven one. Grand and nippy. I'd prefer a VRS to a GTI personally.

    I definitely wouldn't prefer a diesel one to a GTI :D

I have an 07 with 117k on it. Always enjoy driving it, quick but gets 45mpg and is pretty cheap to service. I have had some annoying electrical issues with headlights and airbag warnings however. If you can get a clean one with a good service history and everything appears to be working, go for it. If it has zenons, check they are both bright and without any "pink" tinge as they are a few hundred each to replace. I had to do one at 100k, they other one is on its way out now. Has a big boot of course ;-)

Have one now. Great car. I've a turbo / sensor issue that's been dragging on for ages. Other than that, and the tax, I love it.

Had an 09 one with the newer CR engine. I got rid as soon as the warranty was up. Constant niggly problems, and a few that left me at the side of the road. Didn't age particularly well, lots of rattles inside, and it can be noisy in terms of road and engine noise.

Averaged about 44mpg but most of that was 140kph on the motorway so that's acceptable in my eyes given its close on 90mph in old money.

Loads of room, good seats, easy to add missing spec to if you needed to, cheap to service. Needs good tyres on the front as the power delivery is abrupt meaning you spin the wheels a lot.

Find a good one and it's a decent bang for the money, personally I'd be slow to go back.

I had one for two weeks off a friend while he went away.
    My two cents:
    Very nippy
Interior built well although a little german/boring
    Nice handling
A little bit too acceleration happy as opposed to nice steady power
Feels bigger inside than it looks
Has a nice feel about it when driven "hard"
A little hard on the suspension
    Medium boot
    Seats kill your back

Would I buy one for myself? Probably not.But that is more to the fact the I prefer something that is as comfortable as a bed with the power to boot.I think there are better to be had, though everyone is different.

I love the look of the combi/estate model. Have heard tell of clogged DPF issues popping up now and then, but that can be down to lots of short trips/town driving and lack of servicing/proper oil.

A buddy had a '07 diesel and he got rid of it after 3 months. From memory, the problems were loads of sensors/warning lights, DPF had to be changed and the final straw was an injector (or injectors) for €800. When changing, the rocker cover was off and once the state of the top of the engine at 80k miles with oil sludge/paste was seen, he got rid of it. It had service history, but we reckon low ash oil was never used.

I have a 08 diesel VRS.I got it 3 years ago with 40k km on it. I have a long commute to work and have 135k on it at the minute.
Highly recommend hard match it in terms of performance, space(the boot is huge) and economy. Only watch out's are the diesel particulate filter and sensor which I had to replace. I have had a problem with a few other sensors but relatively easy get fixed.
