Achill-henge. Worth going to?

Now that the summer is coming at long last , I was thinking of going with friends to that large construction on a remote hilltop in Achill called Achill-henge. Anyone ever been? Supposed to be a nice walk. Does anyone know if it will be demolished soon? I'd like to see it before it was demolished. Will be in that county for a wedding over the summer anyway and it will pass a few hours the next day. Anyone know what the fellow who made it is doing now? He was all over the news a year or two ago - wasn't he the fellow who drove the cement truck with "anglo Irish bank" written on it in to the Dail too?

Hopefully the 'fake' henge will be demolished or vandalised beyond repair, sooner rather than later.

I have been to Achill on a couple of occasions but never heard of this place

I did the walk up the hills and pretty much slid back down due to the fog.

Funny enough people always talk about Achill-henge when discussing Celtic Tiger commemorative 'art' on Achill Island.

They never seem to mention the very moving 'Half finished car park' right in the middle of Keel opposite the beautiful strand.....I always get emotional when I see it.

Don't disturb Achill Henge or the druids and the little people will come for you!

What was it supposed to be when finished? A hotel? A block of holiday apartment?

Saw a programme on Achill-henge on tv about 6 months ago and there are lots of questions left unanswered. There must be more concrete in Achill-henge than in a couple of ghost estates. Will it be knocked down? What happened to the builder / where is he? What happened to the banker who bankrolled the builder? Will people be looking at it in hundreds of years time? Everything else on Achill is very vernacular, and planning seems haphazard. What are the planners doing now?

Yes, I've been to it and it's not that remote. There are much nicer walks around the island. I don't know if it's due to be demolished soon but it should be - and the bog returned to it's natural state. Yes, that's the guy, as far as I know he's working in London as a sub-contractor.

Achill island is definitely worth a visit as someone mentioned Keem beach is beautiful as is the view from the top on Minaun - you can drive up a mountain but don't waste your time going to the so called henge. Try kite surfing or regular surfing or climb slivemore, there's loads of better thinds to do.

It can be seen on Bing maps.

I don't think it will last - the concrete could be used to fill the hole in Keel.

wow, look at the size of it compared to the houses - did it realise it was that huge. It must be the biggest piece of art / sculpture in Ireland, in terms of mass / volume / weight. I heard its more impressive than the needle in O'Connell Street Dublin which most people are familiar with.

Now its there, could we tell the yanks that its a replica of ancient Irish monuments used to track the sun? And make a few quid out of it?

I gather there was a survey with the locals and most of them wanted to keep it.

Smacks of rampant inbreeding or Healy-Rae-ism, if that's even a word.

Its the gateway where the Decepticons will be making their return to Earth, who Joe McNamara made a deal with it.

Michael Bay will be filming Transformers 5: Death of a Franchise there next year.

Park up in Westport, hire a bike and cycle along the Greenway to Achill. If the weather's good, it'll be a great day out. Plenty of eating and drinking to be done at the end. The company I hired the bike off were Clew Bay Cycles and they came to pick us up at the end of the day and ferried us back to Westport.

so has anyone here been in recent times? Any talk of it being knocked or will it be our main tourist attraction in the year 3007?

Talk now is onto the building of the interpretive centre with coffee and souvenir shop. Initial plans looks positive, with ample parking and tastefully done so as not take from the monument.

ah sure where would we be without a feckin interpretive centre? Surely every hape of rocks in the country should have one
