    Hi guys,

Plan is/was stove with back boiler and oil c/h as back up and maybe solar panel for water. Builder has asked us to think about getting gas instead of oil.
I've never had gas so have no idea about it....only I suppose you cant have your gas robbed?! Unlike oil!
Anyone any opinions on gas v oil? Building in country.

    Thanks

Gas is much cleaner burning and more reliable than oil. It's also a little cheaper than oil. You don't need a big oil Tank either and no worries about theft.

OP is in the country so probably not on nat gas line so will need a bulk LPG tank. Also bulk lpg is more expensive than oil.
I'm not sure either if, in general, an oil burner is less reliable than gas (assuming both are regularly maintained).

    what is your heat demand

have you looked at a HP - it helps with Part L too and has faster payback than solar thermal

Hi corofin, went with oil. Gas was bout 4k dearer and figured it was another utility bill too. Too be honest we put €500 in oil tank in end October and not gone thru yet. House is 2 story 2200sq ft and fairly open plan down stairs. Have 25kw stove in sitting room which feeds rads after water. We have no end to timber supply and also use stove coal. Prob a bag a week (bit more when we are off over Xmas) Very happy with set up hope this is of some help...ur head would be wrecked!

In terms of kw per €, the SEAI have a spreadsheet that the frequently update of the cost per unit of heat.

    http://www.seai.ie/Publications/Statistics_Publications/Fuel_Cost_Comparison/

    http://www.seai.ie/Publications/Statistics_Publications/Fuel_Cost_Comparison/Domestic_Fuel_Cost_Comparison_January_2014.pdf

As of Jan 2014, the SEAI state:
    Oil 9.9c/kw
    Bulk LPG 13.2c/kw:eek:
    Natural Gas 6.5c/kw
    Wood Pellets 5.5c/kw
Coal seems to be the cheapest at 4.9c/kw

All these figures need to be multiplied by the efficiency of your system.
