I put my car in for a full service a few weeks back. A few days after, it started shuddering at low revs. Turns out ignition coil isnt firing. Mechanic says this was nothing to do with the service so the cost of the fix is 320..thats 1 hr finding the issue and 1 hr fixing it. Does this sound reasonable or am I getting had??

It's bad luck, but coils do go. Checking them wouldn't be part of a standard service?

    320 for fixing a coil ???????

It wouldn't be part of a normal service. What car is it?

Changing a coil is straightforward, but depending on the car, the coils can be funny money to buy. Add in the labour and any diagnostics etc. and it soon racks up.

Its 02 hyundai coupe, he said something about cabels too, and that the coils dont come in singles and only a pack.

it would be good practise to swap the plug leads and plugs as well as the coil /coil pack. No doubt that and the labour and VAT would explain €320. I'd suggest all of that could be a DIY job at much lower cost

So called up another place and they gave me a quote of 140!!

So garage A was 320 less the cost of initial diagnostic of 55 so quote for the fix is 265. Called them back and after talking to his mechanic he said that the coupe has 2 pairs of coils. The 265 was the cost for replacing both pairs (saying that there would be a good chance that the other coils could go too soon after). Garage B's quote of 140 was to replace just one pair. Garage A then agreed to do the whole lot for 280 including the initial diagnostic out of customer goodwill. So thats 280 less the diagnostic of 55 so 225 to replace both pairs of coils and leads. Thats €40 for pints this wknd!

Could have damaged plug leads if he was too rough with them. Happened me once on a polo.

Just for sh!ts and giggles go to micksgarage.ie and get a price for the coil pack. Then see how much money you could possibly save. As was mentioned it's very much a DIY job.

These are the ignition coils they have on the site: http://www.micksgarage.com/search.aspx?fffMake=Hyundai&fffBasemodel=Hyundai%20Coupe&fffModelDescription=COUPE%202001%20to%202009&ffftd_car=2.0&fffBHP=139&fffDepartment=Ignition%20Coils

Would any of these of been suitable? Parts were quoted at 160 + VAT by garage.

    on a more serious note

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6kOUQiSjBI

this video shows someone removing the part off an escort (the ford car). it'll be similar on your car, spark plugs will go from it.

you can ring micks garage, they will take your reg and tell you which is the right part.

Whip out your tool and you'll have it fixed up sharpish, Booyakasha!!!!!!!

You've saved yourself a hundred large to spend on the GGs

As long as the details for your car were entered correctly on their website then it should be the correct part all parts stores pretty much work off the same parts system micksgarage would be the same. They have a live chat on their website if you fancy a chat with them to make sure all is good.

Garages will always try and charge stupid money for repairs. Buy the parts you need and find a mechanic who won't charge you stupid money to put them in that is of course presuming you don't want to do it yourself.

A coil is expensive.remember a service nowadays is a rushed job,get the car in and out in 1 hour.they only check the bare amount.remember also most garages will use cheap engine oil and may screw up your engine in the long run.after all its your engine and unless your only keeping it short term you may pay for it ling term.
