Im in the process of trading in a car in the north, the VRT part seems straight forward and i can use the calculator on-line, however is there a VAT implication also?

    thanks

No VAT/duty as you're importing from another EU country.

Thanks Blastman, thats a relief....i was worried for a minute there.

the process is to bring it to the NCT centre first right? they register it and then go pay the VRT at a revenue office, is that correct? or do you also pay the VRT at the NCT center?

    cheers

You are liable for VAT down here if the car is either less than 6 months old or has less than 6000 km on the clock.

You have 7 days from being the car into the country to book an appointment at with the NCT for a VRT appraisal. They will give you the VRT figure and you can pay them. Once the VRT is paid you will be issued a reg number. After a few days the car's reg will appear on the motor tax office's database and you can tax it online. The online PIN is usually the last 6 digits of the car's VIN. The whole process must be completed within 30 days of bringing the car into the country.

VAT may be due if it wasn't already paid in the other EU country before import.

I bought my car in NI and was liable for VAT. Paid it here but you get it VAT free in NI.

    Bazz26 is on the money.
