The quotes from the article on the Journal suggest Cllr. Deegan went to restrain the man after he started shouting abuse and knocked the flyers out of his hand.

Walking away clearly not an option that was considered!

From the few articles around, the chain of events seems to go like this:

The man shouted out at the councillor from his car, the councillor approached the car. The next bit of information is that the man knocked his election literature out of his hand. Bit of a gap then in information, next we're told is that the councillor is trying to restrain the man up against the car and he got those cuts on his face. The man the councillor is accusing was actually the first to go to the Gardai with a complaint.

Are you, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist Party?

He's not a communist...he may be stupid and he may be a communist but he is NOT a pornstar!"

More than meets the eye here.

“I tried to restrain him up against the car,” Deegan said, adding that he sustained the superficial cuts to his face in the ensuing scuffle.

Are these the rounds they will go to to get people to listen to their sh1te promises?

Sounds more like self defence to me.

I tend to agree, strange cuts to his face, they are more like wounds caused by someone defending themselves, not punching someone.

I'm not a fan of Fine Gael but how anyone can justify assaulting someone (no matter their political background) is beyond me.

If somebody was "restraining" you against a car, would you call it assault?

Sticks and stones, councillor! Name-calling doesnt need restraining...

    Assault is assault. Deplorable behaviour.

Now, OP do me a favour and state what lies he was telling. Don't just drop a link to YouTube or an article? Write out what the lies you maintain he told are. Have you the courage of your convictions to drop the internet warrior image for a few minutes and take responsibility for your actions - go on publish the lies by your own hand? First hand, your responsibility!

He represents a party that told lies to become elected.

The more this goes on the more it looks like that the councillor was the aggressor or at least that he was the first to turn the situation into a physical one and now a bit like the rest of his party he is trying to lie and wrangle his way out of it and blame others.

    That's never going to happen.

It's like the left wing alliance... Everything the government do is wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. They'll happily shout that from the rooftops. All the while desperately saying in their heads "oh please don't let anyone ask ME for a solution"... Then..." no wait, eureka I have the solution... Tax the rich "...

    It's boring at this stage.

Tell me one lie this individual told. Not that that is any excuse for assault.

    What lies?

Before you answer. Make sure to think carefully Bout the fact that FG were not provided with a majority rule.

what? where did i say i supported the assault???????? i have absolutely no party affiliation, none!! not fianna fail, not fine gael, not labour, not green, not swp/pbp, not sinn fein, none. is that spelled out enough for you

No, your whole thing is about this supposed revolution that you constantly bleat on about (multiple threads started). Yet you don't have a notion of what would actually happen after it

You're saying you don't approve of what this scumbag did but you're revelling in his actions all the same. Which is just as disgusting

    Get off the soapbox

It's people like you that give real liberals a bad name. You haven't a bulls notion

Also, how in gods name do you know he was telling lies? You don't know. He could have been, but you weren't there so maybe don't lie yourself

well they can't say they weren't warned!!

A Fine Gael councillor was assaulted while out canvassing.

Cllr Humphrey Deegan, inset, was canvassing for party colleague John O'Sullivan in Clonakility, west Cork, when the incident happened.

Mr Deegan said canvassers were calling at houses on Connolly Street when a man launched obscenities and then hit him in the face.

"The level of abuse thrown at me was appalling. He was calling me a blue-shirt bastard and a liar," said Mr Deegan, who will report it to gardai.

You couldn't even get the information in the title of the thread right. He is not trying to get elected, he is campaigning on behalf of a colleague. His own job as a Town Councillor is gone and he is not standing for election to to the County Council.

I will spell it out more accurately for you

He represents a party (Fine Gael) who told lies (quiet a few, in fact too many to mention) so as they could give themselves a chance to be elected ( and claim ministerial pensions, which they so richly deserved for all their years of perseverance in waiting in the wings to be elected, especially as the alternative was to cancel their leave of absence from their teaching jobs that was giving them a lesser pension)

And by the way, how is someone shouting abuse at you and knocking leaflets out of your hand a reason to assault someone?

The amount of FG apologists that seem to appear on boards and other social media outlets, leads me to believe that FG have actually setup their own social media department.

In the name of fairness,I'm not an FG fan, but if you are pissed off with a political parties stance, roughing them up on the street is a scummy thing to do not matter who they are or represent. It's Indefensible.

    However.

If it emerges that the canvasser did indeed happen to be the first one to use physical force, he should be prevented from doing anything at all that involves having face to face contact with Joe public.

Excellent link to a video of people inside a television studio. What's that got to do with the misleading sensationalist thread title?

Are you serious, assault is assault, he should be charged and brought to court, end of.

are you saying that because he is a councillor that different rules should apply and that he should be just stopped from canvassing in future?

Yeah of course he should be charged. Whichever one proves to be the instigator.

He was calling me a blue-shirt bastard and a liar," said Mr Deegan, who will report it to gardai

Report what to the police, that he's "a blue-shirt bastard and a liar"

Any political party that dares canvass on my doorstep will be told in the same fashion, feck off you lying scumbag, followed by a triad of abuse.

Next to religion these people(politicians) are the scum of the earth.

Would you beat him up too big man? Like the scumbag in this situation did?

Seeing as every single person involved in politics is "scum of the earth" according to you

This is a democracy - how dare you advocate bringing violence and intimidation into it.

You do a lot of whinging about "the system" renegademaster, and the fact that nobody shows up at your protests (I'm beginning to see why, if this is your attitude) - why don't you have the balls to run yourself and try to change something if you're so inclined, instead of engaging in this sort of nonsense.

Hitting a councillor trying to get on with their business - yeah, that'll change things alright

Like the scumbag in this situation did?

just using your quote as a an example...

How come everyone professes to know what actually happened?
I've read all I can find and it appears to be very sketchy, brief and only one witness's statement?
If assault is suspected , wouldn't a file go to the DPP and then a decision made for formal charges down the road? Wouldn't that be followed by a court where the incident would be judged?
Isn't that how it works in a democracy?

Do you kick the **** out of pensioners as well?

The problem with this ssociety is people who approach it in the manner you seem to suggest.

If would be candidates call at your door, is it beyond the realms of possibility to have a rational reasoned debate with them, to be put cross your views as to why you won't vote for them, and why you would vote for someone else, without being abusive.

Or is the fact that the strength of your argument extends to, "I want to pay as little taxes as I can, and have the best quality services handed to me at the same time?" or "yes I want all these services, finance them how you see best, but make sure everyone else pays for them and I don't have to"
