    1. Predict the IMT, an average of five selected stations, which has averaged 11.1 C for the 30-yr period 1981 to 2010.

    2. Predict the highest daily maximum at any reporting (met.ie) station.

    3. Predict the lowest daily minimum at any reporting (met.ie) station.

    4. Predict the monthly precip as a percentage of normal (for 11 reporting stations in met.ie Monthly Summary)

    5. Predict the monthly sunshine as a percentage of normal (for 6 reporting stations in met.ie Monthly Summary)

    6. Bonus -- Predict the rainfall on Sunday 11th at Ballyhaise. If everyone says the same thing we may run a different bonus question to be announced later. In theory, this would be to give an outlook for conditions for the third stage of the Italian cycling event that is running a route from Armagh to Dublin on the 11th. Will decide on the 2nd if this bonus question is going to stand or if we need a substitute which would be for a day later into the month.

Deadlines for entry ... you have until the end of the day on Thursday 1st of May, to enter without penalty. The actual deadline is set at 0300h on Friday, the 2nd of May. After that, it's five point penalties for each half-day late, 0300 to 1500 and 1500 to 0300h used to determine half days.

Enter at this location, or on the thread itself.

John mac, you had me worried there for a second, then I noticed your entry was a lot earlier than your message. :)

Thanks for your entries (to date) ... for your interest, I get this template from the entry form which pretty much guarantees that if I don't type over your numbers while setting up the table of entries, it has to be accurate. Have to watch the bonus numbers as they don't like to stay in a column. And some of you have numbers in your username. But I like a challenge to stay awake while doing these tables. Check my work in the table (when it appears) against your entry to verify. I also made a note to self, DOCARCH down to Joe Public are all 5 pt penalties. At the moment, your entry would be 10 pts down and that will change to 15 at 0300h.

The consensus calls for a fairly average month with perhaps a slight bias towards warmth, sun and dry conditions although very slight on average, and the outlook for rain on the 11th seems to be divided between a dry camp of about one third of the entries and a wetter camp of another third with some in between expecting slight amounts. Let's hope that whoever is right, the rain doesn't interfere with the event or any other (10th-11th) weekend plans.

Will edit in any further entries and adjust consensus.

Its got to the stage that I now adjust my score to consensus but now it looks a lot warmer than my 10.5c AVG. Still Ill stick.

    Maybe itll snow or something!!!

Report on the first seven days ...

    IMT is 11.2 C

    PRC is 136%

    SUN (est) around 35% :(

no temperature extremes likely to survive to end of month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,394 ✭✭✭pauldry

Sunshine in sligo thus far is only 15percent Id say

Next week will get a bit more sun but bonus question looks very unlikely tohave zero rain so any downpour and consensus may actually get something wrong the expert.!

    Where does he live anyways

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,931 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

If we take a weighted average of our locations, then Con must live somewhere near the M6 buoy. :)

    Maybe he clings to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,931 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Ballyhaise has probably had at least 5 mm rain since midnight, I have seen most of the hourly reports overnight. So very few guesses will turn out too high, that's known.

    Ballyhaise 6.4mm yesterday. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,931 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

And so the three closest forecasts (waterways 6.2, Tae laidir 6.0, Bsal 7.0) will get the ten points, after that, I will go down in groups of three so that Pauldry, traecy1 and delw have nine points, then lostinashford, kindredspirit and rameire have eight. At seven points will be Jpmarn, Robxx7, MTC and 200motels as I am applying a slightly elastic high-side error for the one forecast that went significantly over. From there on, I will go with pairs at 6 (okla, dasa29), 5 (Yoghurt87, danno also Con Sensus), 4 (dacogawa, rikand) and 3 for Johnmac. The zero forecasts will get 2 points.

I'm not going to lie, I had no idea what I was doing when I filled in mine. :D

It's largely guesswork with a bit of inspired pattern recognition -- the hard part is to guess what the second half of a month will be like, I think most of the more experienced people in the contest would tend to issue similar forecasts for the first half based on guidance but as you can see from this bonus question, guidance for ten days or more is fairly vague on details. This is very much of an evolving field where large numbers of people have made slight advances, and claims of larger advances seem to fail the test of objective numerical validation, unless your name is Con Sensus, then you've got something.

Moorepark, Phoenix Park & Shannon Airport 19deg at 15:00.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,931 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

    Update after days 8 to 14 ...

    IMT is now 11.0 C

PRC is 167% after a wet week (other than Cork) with an average of 198%

SUN now very much estimated due to sparse data (in Ag Report) around 60% after a somewhat better week with perhaps 75-80 per cent.

MAX a work in progress, MIN has to be quite high so far, can recall some 5s. :)

Had a look back and found 4.0 at Knock to be the lowest, 4.4 at Mullingar.

19.4deg yesterday in Mullingar. A bit disappointing?
    Maybe bettered today?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,931 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Update for the end of third week of May ...

    IMT has reached 11.5 C after a week that averaged 12.6 C.

PRC has held almost steady at 163% after another rather wet week for most away from parts of the south coast (week at 155%).

SUN has improved somewhat to near 75% after a full report for last week that saw an average of 101%.

Extremes as far as we know are 20.4 and 3.1 C.

Con might not do so well this month, could be some mercy rule applications forthcoming especially on rainfall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,792 ✭✭✭Joe Public

It's likely the last day of the month will be the warmest!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,931 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

That would be good from my point of view, can we also have the 29th or 30th be the coldest? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,931 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

I am a bit late getting a June contest started, just contacted the forms man now, hopefully we can launch it on Wednesday but to give you a heads up, bonus will ask for the location and amount of the heaviest 24-hour calendar-day rainfall at the various reporting stations (including all that appear in "daily data" in past weather on the website). And a bonus of two extra points for any who nail the date, one point if nobody does for whoever is closest.

Also I did not yet announce a summer forecast contest, will do that and as several of you like to enter those, will give you more time to enter (probably end of 3rd).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,931 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Meanwhile, 1.7 C at Dublin (A) on Tuesday for a new minimum. Likely to have a new MAX from today with some hourly obs as high as 21 so far. Whatever is reported, as Joe says above, could be eclipsed on Saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,394 ✭✭✭pauldry

    22.3c in Shannon

    Beat that Saturday!
