Stupid cuts/censorship from dvds that annoyed you?

going back a few years, I remember being downright livid that the DVD release of the Matrix had been cut to remove some headbutts during the Morpheus/Agent Smith fight, it just seemed so stupid to me that they removed that. I could never understand the rationale behind that

just recently we were watching Girls Und Panzer and there was a song that had to be changed for unknown reasons, possibly fear of copyright but it's an old. If you've not heard of Girls Und Panzer, it's an anime show about highschool girls who compete in tank warfare tournaments, it's every bit as bonkers as it sounds but is seriously good fun and they seem to have really included a lot of details about the tanks, etc. And tank cakes, naturally

Anyway in the original broadcast version, the Russian team are singing this old wartime song as they ride into battle. It's nothing essential to the plot or anything, but it was just cool and really set the mood. This is it:

However! In the version we saw... the scene played out with the ****ing Tetris theme

There was a song a few years ago in some WWE game that censored the word "hit" from the line "Every hit that we take".

I mean, what the fúck? It was a 16s game, where the aim was to hit people, and they censored the word "hit".

I'm angry now OP. Fúck sake. Even boards is trying to censor my anger.

    FÜCK

First time I actually noticed censorship of a movie was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. One version has a guy get his heart ripped out, the other was more tame. I despise censorship now. If no laws were broken in the filming* I can't see why a grown up shouldn't be allowed see it.

*A movie with animal cruelty in it involving real animals would be an example.

I remember a friend pointing out to me that basically all US DVDs are 5 - 10 mins longer than European ones.

Can't remember why though. I think NTSC/PAL framerates were partly to blame, but not sure if that was all of it.

There's something very off putting about grown-up who like to watch Japanese cartoons or grown men pretending to wrestle each other.

Each to their own I suppose, just very odd.

Differences between English subbed and English dubbed versions pissed me off in nearly all animes.

Are we talking TV censorship here?

If so, I remember watching Robocop as a kid when it was on TV. Perfectly kiddie-safe movie, innit? Or so I thought, until I saw it years later on DVD and had my mind blown by just how astonishingly violent it was!

    Or this masterpiece :pac:

Spoilers just in case someone has not seen the movie.

It'a only when i think about it i remember watching i am legend and the ending is Will Smith in front of the glass
with a grenade as the zombie types break in
and then there is an alternative ending which i seen a few years later where
he and the woman and kid are allowed out by the zombie types and they drive off into the sunset to the sanctuary place

How anyone could possibly think anyone would want to watch The Big Lebowski in this form, is beyond me...

cartoons can be awesome, and not just Japanese ones... You don't have to be a kid to enjoy Wall-E or Up, some of my favourite movies are aimed at kids.

and there's plenty of animation aimed squarely at adults too. In Japan sometimes they'll animate something instead of going for live-action because of budget, see Perfect Blue for example, that's a seriously dark psychological thriller and even inspired Black Swan. some of the best sci-fi and fantasy I've seen has been anime

Don't see anything strange about it, just another art form ;)

Still reads as "Girls Underpants" :pac:

The original ending of "The Butterfly Effect", which was changed because American test audiences found it too upsetting -

The director's cut alternate ending shows Evan turning on the home movies, only this time instead of watching a home movie at a neighborhood gathering, he's watching the video of his own birth. He travels back to when he is about to be born and commits suicide by strangling himself with his own umbilical cord. Therefore he was never there to change the timeline in the first place and explains why Evan's mother had two still-born children before him.

Speaking of Kon, the suicide episode of Paranoia Agent had some cuts here but still has an 18 rating. Understandable but I've seen much worse, especially when you consider that a show like Elfen Lied is only rated 15.

Loads of UK releases of action films have had very minor cuts you might not notice. Its very annoying.

The bbfc really disliked multiple headbutts and specialized martial arts weaponry for a long time.

    Absolutely.

I find its mostly immature men in their 20s who are into those shows.

The humour in them is extremely juvenile.

I will concede there are some decent animated movies. One of my favourites, Waltz with Bashir about the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in the 1980s was excellent, and the animation added to the impact of the film.

You think? It was violent, disturbing and downright upsetting. Other shows like Hellsing for example, as overly violent as it was, it wasn't really any more graphic than Elfen Lied, but got an 18s cert?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,778 ✭✭✭✭Princess Consuela Bananahammock

I honestly do not see the point of a 15s cert.

Either a movie is 18s, or it isn't.

There's plenty of rubbish anime alright, entire genres that I've no interest in, shows that seem to go on endlessly like One Piece, Bleach and Naruto that I'll probably never watch, and some dodgy juvenile crap like HOTD... But holy crap is there ever some gold to be found!

I'd add to that anything by Studio Ghibli, especially Miyazaki. Satoshi Kon, Makoto Shinkai and Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf Children left me in tears) all have some serious masterpieces under their belt. In terms of TV shows then you have things like Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, Monster and then Steins;Gate which absolutely blew me away and is easily one of the best things I have ever seen. Not to mention Shinichiro Watanabe for both Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, both absolute masterpieces.

Yeah Cowboy Bebop really is a show that anybody can like. Shame that some just won't get over their bias because it's easily up there with the best TV series ever made. :)

Absolutely legendary show alright :D It stands up so well because it has such a fantastic ending, and speaking of, that's one of the things I tend to love about anime shows, quite a few have a story they want to tell and they bring it to a conclusion. The aforementioned Steins;Gate, just an incredible story and ending. Or recently I watched Maho Shoujo Madoka Magica and I was blown away, really not expecting it to be that good at all.

Have to give a nod to Evangelion too! It's pretty divisive and you kinda either love it or hate it, or are just downright puzzled by it, but god damn if it's not one of the most downright iconic anime shows ever.

Oh, also while mentioning great anime, I know it's been a bit overhyped, but Attack on Titan really is epic :D

Humanity is driven to near extinction by titans, the last of them are living in cities protected by gigantic walls, until one day the titans break through...

There's a TV show I used to watch called Lost Girl. It's like a Buffy made for a tenner by somebody who only half remembers it and keeps mixing it up with True Blood. Anyway - the American version has to have the naughty language overdubbed for the SyFy channel - proper "Curse you, Maggot Farmer!" quality stuff - but more importantly, it has to be about three minutes shorter than the original Canadian one, to fit in extra ads, and so the US get a specially edited version that other countries don't.

By some absolutely bizarre coincidence, those three minutes almost always came from the lesbian character, regardless of how important or not her dialogue or scenes were. What was weird was how hard it was to figure out exactly what the logic was - surprisingly graphic sex scenes could be totally intact; a character who ate his own fingers mid sentence, that was shown intact; establishing shots of generic Toronto suburbs, they would be left intact. But lumps of a sentence here, or a quick hand gesture or something, that would be cut. Completely harmless banter jokes, they could be cut. Key explanatory plotline stuff that played into the whole later season, that could be cut. But almost always from her.

The weirdest example was one episode where the character had literally one line, all episode, and they still managed to cut three of her four words of dialogue.

    It was just... weird.

I'm looking forward to seeing how much is left of Spartacus by the time they're finished with it. What I don't understand is why they buy in shows that are specifically known for this particular stuff, and then edit it anyway.

It's a video game but in the recent South Parkl The Stick of Truth game, they cut out the scene where you get anally probed by aliens and you perform an abortion on a man. Sounds ridiculous but if you watch the scenes where they're cut it's surprising they did as it's no more graphic than the show qhich isn't censored over in Europe at all so it's all the more so annoying and the censored scenes were shown in the US.

Was it the puppy scene? That seemed to bother a lot of people.

Yeah, Hellsing is less violent. Just a poor certification system then, I guess.

I'm starting to notice some record companies and bands putting up censored versions of their songs on YouTube. It's really annoying and silly. Especially when it's just words like "God damn".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,090 ✭✭✭jill_valentine

The stuff that always, and forever will, break my heart is when a show uses absolutely the perfect song in the TV broadcast, only to miss out on the DVD rights for the same song. So you have something so absolutely perfect and iconic in your mind, only to be presented with some WTF Tesco substitute in its place. The bloody Tetris theme takes the biscuit though.

When Martin put barbed wire around his penis and raped a heavily pregnant woman up the arse, who was at the rear of a human centipede.

Cant believe this was cut from the UK release of Human Centipede 2.

    Nanny state!
