Signing for credits question

Hi. Got a letter to say my Jobseekers Benifit time was coming to an end in the coming weeks and the application form to apply for Jobseekers Allowance.

I know myself that I won't qualify for the Jobseekers allowance (means test), so can I just tell them I'd like to sign on for credits. Or am i required to go through the whole process of applying for the allowance and do I have to get rejected officially before I can sign on for credits ?

Also - when you are signing on for credits - is it just once a year ? Would being signed on for credits have any benift such as helping me get on courses / schemes ?

Thanks if anyone has any information or answers to these questions.

    M

Call in and tell them that you dont wish to purse jsa that you want to sign for credits. Once a year for credits but you still have to be available and looking for full time work. You can go on jobbridge with a credit claim and receive the €50 top up. Its important that you sign for credits for your pension. You wont be picked for CE schemes etc from having a credit claim.

    Hi there

My previous PRSI role finished at the end of April 2012 but I never applied for Jobseekers Benefit as I had the means to support myself.

However, when I had to apply for JB back in March of this year it was made clear to me by the Deciding Officer that I had insufficient PRSI contributions.

My partner's salary also ensured I was ineligible for JA when it was means tested.

So I was advised to apply for Jobseeker's Credits (which I did). I am due later on this month to sign my Annual Declaration of Unemployment at my local office in order to maintain my Jobseeker's Credits.

I have applied for several jobs in the interim all to no avail.

My question is does anybody know how long I must keep signing on for JC in order to become eligible for a JB payment?

    Thanks

Signing for credits only keeps your prsi record safe re pensions, to re-qualify for JSB you need to get min 13wks work with paid contributions.
