In shock, had to pay out €300 plus extras and leave a load of new clothes just purchased at the airport in order to get the flight out of Dublin this morning. Had 3 bags. Has anyone been done like this? It was embarrassing having to throw out clothes on the ground. They cost a lot of money, have only a few €'s left . As a student I'm desperate. Have to stay away for 1 year in college. Does anyone know if I could get some sort of refund? Purchased lots of clothes before leaving to be on the safe side. Any help or suggestions appreciated. Tried to contact Aer Lingus but surprise surprise, no email address for complaints. They have a contact form with a auto reply submit button which does not work! Would apprcriate some help thanks

Did you not read the booking sections on prepaying for your baggage? It is clearly marked on the Manage Booking section of AL website ...

Depending on destination you have to pay for baggage over a standard (cabin baggage) allowance.

    Tel no for enquires

    0818 365044

Or download aer lingus app - it has all the contact numbers listed under information

I am presuming you didn't leave the mammy make your booking ...

    Best of luck

    Get refund for what?

What did Aer Lingus do wrong?

What was the 300 euro for?

What weight were the bags? You must have turned up with three giant cases full of clothes if they asked for that much cash and you still had to leave stuff behind.

Clothes are cheaper in virtually every other country in the world so why takes three suitcases full of new clothes with you?

Sound like poor planning to me. And I don't believe for a second that you're 'desperate', it sound like mummy and daddy splashed out on a new wardrobe, just ask them to wire more money!

    General Rules;

Baggage allowance is per passenger, per direction.
Baggage Fees apply for all Economy Low fares.
PLUS/FLEX fare customers, enjoy the benefit of having one 20kg bag included in their fare. Baggage fees apply for additional weight or bags.
Pay online up to two hours before departure at a discount or pay the full fee at the airport.
A maximum of 3 bags per passenger can be booked online up to 2 hours before departure.
Discount extra bag fee available online. Standard extra bag fee is charged at the airport.
Buying an extra bag gives you the flexibility to spread your weight across more bags, but it does not increase your overall weight. E.g. if you purchase 25kg and buy an extra bag, you have a combined weight allowance of 25kg spread over 2 bags.
Excess weight will be charged per kilo per flight for any passenger exceeding their personal checked baggage allowance at the airport on the day of travel.
Pooling or sharing of baggage allowance is permitted when with a travel partner within the same booking and when checking in together.
One collapsible buggy/stroller per infant or child, plus one of the following items: car seat, booster seat or travel cot can be carried free of charge. Any other items over this allowance can be booked online as checked baggage.
Sports Equipment will be carried at the applicable rate.
If you booked through a travel agent, please contact them directly in relation to your baggage allowance.
    Baggage fees are non-refundable.

"Standard extra bag fee is charged at the airport."

    "Baggage fees are non-refundable."

It doesn't look like the airline did anything wrong in this instance!

You would have been better off not getting the flight and shipping all your clothes separately and booking a later flight.

Tbh... unless you're flying first class with a carrier like Emirates, I don't know how you expected to be able to check in 3 bags.

There's unfortunately not much you can do because most carriers allow at max 1 checked in bag in economy and depending on your route Aer Lingus may have offered no checked in luggage at all.

From what I recall, EI allow a combined total allowance of 20kg on short-haul (regardless of how many bags you're travelling with).

Anything over that is charged at €9 per KG if booked online or €15 if you roll up at the airport.

Edit: See allowances have increased since Dec 2013

I'm a bit wiser now after the event! I obviously misread the part of sharing the bags. It was all panic worrying about accommodation and costs, leaving home etc. Did go through the website but to be honest found the whole thing a bit daunting. Reading the small print is what comes to mind

Curious as to what you did with your stuff?

You could have left it in the airport left luggage and asked someone to pick it up. Bit late now though...

Aer Lingus is worse than Ryanair,, it was a race to the bottom and Aer Lingus won.

But that was a race MOL was happy to lose..

European airlines never routinely allowed more the 20Kg for regular (e.g. non business class, frequent flyer status etc) passengers, even before Ryanair.
