Going grey naturally for a woman

Was wondering what people's general opinion is on women who don't dye their hair and go grey naturally.
I am 35 with black hair and have been keeping it dark until recently. Sick of dying it! It's a short hair cut. What for you think?

I think it can look amazing! A woman I work with has just come back from leave having had her usual (dyed) colour stripped from her hair, so it's totally grey. She had just got sick of the upkeep and tbh she looks amazing. She has a short, asymmetric bob and the grey just makes it look even cooler.

I started grey-ing really early, which I don't mind at all except for the fact that it's sparse and all-over, so I keep colouring it like I always have. I've always said though that when I get a good bit of white going in the temples that I'm having a Daphne Guinness/ Caitlin Moran streak! I'm actually looking forward to it.

I think the common factor in grey/white styles that I love is that the person makes it look intentional, and it's not frumpy.

I love grey hair on women! It looks fab! I love the glam grans rocking the grey hair I think there is something so elegant and beautiful about it.

Well if anyone is watching The Great British Bake Off at the moment, there is an Asian lady called Chetna who has black hair going grey. That's what mine is like, slightly less greys at the moment!

I have always thought that it looks fabulous on women. Especially a sleek bob. I feel it can take tears off someone as it looks so much more natural.

My mam has fully grey/white hair and has had since her 20s. It suits her. She's always kept it short and well groomed. I on the other hand have long hair that is going grey in streaks predominantly at the front and it looks dreadful if it's not dyed. Tbh I reckon it's 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other. Either you keep it long, rarely pay for a cut but dye it every six weeks, or keep it grey short and styled and pay for a cut every six weeks. You might be one of those lucky people that look good with messy grey hair but I know I amn't!

Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada! :)

In reality at 35 it might age you a little purely because we're used to older women letting the grey out and you might be assumed to be older because of that angle. Try it for a while, it's not like you can't do anything about it if you change your mind. I think it can look fantastic, but all the grey ladies I can think of are over 50, like Jamie Lee Curtis :).

Chetna's hair is fab, although I'm struggling to find a good photo of it. It looks better on TV.

In all honesty, I cannot wait for my hair to go more grey than it is currently- I only have few little silver lads around my temple. One in particular is called George. ;)

In all seriousness, yes, grey hair ca look a bit "old" but they key thing to remember is that your hair ages as your skin does- which is why older women whose hair is grey but who dye is black or the colour of their youth can look really washed out and ill, it's because their skin colour and everything has aged at the same rate as their hair. SO it looks wrong to dye it.

I don't think it looks great if most of your hair is still its natural colour, especially if you have dark hair, I think Chetna's hair would look nicer if she dyed it. Once most of your hair is grey/white though, I think it looks better without dye.

At 35 she's hardly a glam granny though!

As others have said I think it can look fantastic but psychologically we are geared to expect a grey haired woman to be an older woman. You probably have to work on your look in terms of clothes and makeup to combat that. I think you'd need an edgy look to get away with it and still be perceived as youthful even if you actually look quite young.

As a bloke of the same age I would say to you keep using the dye for another few years.

I think that some women look fab with grey hair, as long as it's a cropped, groomed style. Someone have the example of Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, and I totally agree she looked lovely.

I think if your make-up and clothes aren't on the frumpy side, it'll be great. Far less maintenance too!

Not for me. They will have to prise the hair colour out of my cold dead hands. I'm sure most of my hair is grey at this stage but I keep it coloured and use a root wand in between. It's a rare woman that can carry off the grey look perfectly. Just my humble opinion.

PS I'll be the little old lady in the Nursing home looking like Phyliss Diller.:D

What is this root wand you speak of? I googled it and all I got was some gawdawful hippie selling 'real' magic wands!

I personally think that 35 is a little too young to accept the grey but I see how it might be appealing. No women in my family have. My 90yr old nan still colours her hair. It is a medium blonde so nothing stark but accepting the inevitable has never ran in my family and I am not sure how I would feel about it.

I am 25 with dark hair and boy do I have greys! I wouldn't think about stopping colouring until I was at least 50 though

Never mind those hippies, you need a trip to Marks and Sparks

I'm not sure if they sell them in Dublin, I found them in the M&S outlet in Banbridge. They are brilliant, I'd be lost without mine.

Looks good and cheap but some of the reviews say it runs in the rain! Have you had that experience?

No problems with it at all Rosy. Mind you I haven't stood in a downpour recently:D I find it great to keep me going until my next hair appointment.
