Great bank of late grass this season. Combined with dry ground conditions it's making for good late grazing, even on heavy ground.
Cattle were up munching this morning and tey were happy out. Big old hedge to lie under at night.

New shed is nearly finished here and I'm considering leaving the weanlings out till Christmas anyway. I've a serious cover here that by Teagasc standards I should be mowing.

You need a shed to house a sick animal and a crush for handling/testing in order to get a herd number. Are you thinking of that?

Dairy farmers have to have slurry storage, whereas dry stock farmers don't

not true around here, county council have seen to that. Neighbour with 10 store cattle was told to build a slatted tank or stop keeping cattle.

You can outwinter everything alright, but there is a limit to the stocking rate allowed. Anything over this must be housed or it can affect your SFP due to cross compliance. That's my understanding of it.

We have 2 weeks of grass ahead ours. But if half go in this weekend, we'll have alot of grass for the spring

Yeah. Had a great year this year. But land is starting to get heavy. Not cutting up yet bit getting there......

Some fugger is probably come on and complain about drought :)

Have 4 weeks of grass ahead of main herd here. The split heifers have about 6 weeks with a bit of ad lib hay in the final week or so.

Getting dauby in the moors here though, have to keep the cows moving.

Have enough bales here to last till 1st of April if needs be.
This weather if it keeps up will make up my mind.Land getting a bit squelchy underfoot.

Still have cattle in callaghs(flood plain to you dubs) today. Walked callaghs this morning still dry with some grazing left. Raining now. Will be moving some today to upland today. I hope to knock another month out of the upland.

Walk all the farm with my dad today. Ground is holding up very well. A lot better than I expected. And have 3+ weeks of good grass ahead of cattle if they are able to stay out, which is more than I thought. very little rain in the last 36 hours. But fairly wild.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,873 ✭✭✭Birdnuts

Incredible mild autumn so far and the dry September means another few weeks utilizing some late grass growth on the drier parts of the farm. Have moved the heavier cattle off the wetter bottom fields now though.

Looking v similar here. 3 weeks min of grass which would be unbelievable. Paddocks grazed two weeks ago are greening up nicely. The unseasonably warm weather and lack of severe frost is helping no end as is the lack of rain. Ground still like concrete here.

Ground holding up alright, put in six cows due over the next few days in yesterday apart from that all out, don't think we will be bringing anything in soon for lack of grass, weather will decide what we do.

First few cows gone in. All will be housed or sold within 2 weeks.

All cattle in except a few spring calvers that are on a rough grazing field but they'll be in by the weekend. Still a bit of grass left but it'll be needed for the sheep

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,433 ✭✭✭darragh_haven

Looks like there will be no animal house before November comes. No group with more than 20 animals in it since today.

Heavy cattle in since last week, lighter ones still out but not sure how much longer. The ground is starting to rip a bit. Would've been great to have them out until the clocks changed but not likely. Still a bit mild, pneumonia still a concern if we put in the calves.
